Think back to the DS9 pilot. The series starts off on the USS Saratoga with a Vulcan captain, but it's not about them. Think back to the Voyager pilot. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Abrams movies. I wasn't even into Star Trek until seeing them because I believed all the naysay about the show until then. However, after watching the actual show, it's clear why it was insulted: most people are just dumb asses and dumb asses are into sports instead of civil rights. My uncle tried to explain this to me when I was a young child and getting excited about an episode of TNG. "Star Trek isn't made for normal people, it's made for people like you who are much more intelligent than average." I thought he was just trying to give me some positive-thinking bullshit that adults liked to give kids back then. But I also believed in the blank slate and that were were all born with pretty much the same level of intelligence and mental capacities and that education and nurturing made the most difference in intelligence later on in life. By the time I actually reached that later point in life I could see that was bullshit. I didn't become smart because I watched Star Trek as a kid, I watched Star Trek because I was a smart kid.
