Because the writers ran out of ideas and, like all comedies once they plateau, began resorting to social commentary as a means of making episodes instead of keeping the show a tight knit comedy about the Simpson family itself. The latter idea would have been more difficult to maintain, however, and there are only so many plotlines you can make for the same few characters. But the show proved itself incredibly profitable and the studios demanded the writers keep making episodes and so the show lost its spark. In a perfect world the show would have ended around season 11 and be remembered as one of the greatest shows of all time. But now with more bad episodes than good the show is a joke and will go down in posterity as a show which went past its use by date years before it was finally put down.

i try to avoid anything post season 11 like the plague.

IF you're talking about the episode where Patty/Selma comes out as gay, the point is that Marge, despite claiming to be a progressive and accepting, can't actually deal with homosexuality when it's her family.
It's actually an attack at a lot of so-called liberals, the whole "not in my backyard" kind of approach.

It's also noteworthy that Marge did have a fear of flying because she caught her father being a Steward. While it's played for laughs the subtext couldn't be more than obvious that Marge saw her father being a homo.
