Snyder did nothing wrong. Watchmen isn't a comic about subtly and nuance, the whole point is visceral realism. In the comic Manhattan and Rorschach graphically kill people as a statement against the clean deaths/violence that had previously existed in capeshit. The sex is there to show that these are real people, and was censored for early 80s sensibilities. Given Moore's comics have had graphic sex later on I have no reason to believe it wouldn't have been included in the comic had DC not been bitchy about it at the time.

The gang scene was in the comic, as were bones shattering/stabbings, but Snyder extended the scene slightly. THe prison scene is the most extended, by a few minutes, as in the comic you only see a few panels of them fighting (and easily defeating) escaped criminals. Why people people flip their shit over this is beyond me, I suspect they're looking for something to bitch about. The usual shrill of "missing the point" is there, and yet Snyder never adds action where action hadn't already existed in the comic

Also the arm breaks in the alley fight were clean in the comic, in the film they get a slow motion zoom as a fountain of poorly renrered red jelly spews out.

All the actual gore is when the bombs go off and there are piles of mangled corpses blocking doorways and such, in the film they are just vaporised. Really graphic, horrible violence can be very impactful if used at the right time, imagine if people seeing the film for the first time had only seen campy clean superhero violence thus far and are then confronted with Dr manhatten exploding people. It could potentially make people question everything about super hero movies when they suddenly realise most heroes have the potential to visit horrific violence on other people but you never see it so they can keep the 12a rating.

Moulin Rouge made more sense.. sort of with the Men coming from work to a burlesque to be entertained.
