Narrative is dumb AND shallow yet drags around a lot pretending to be the opposite, same for the characters, Spielberg put little effort in the movie bare a few sequences, most being action sequences, sloppy editing.

It has a great OST though.

Because the narrative and characters have little to no substance with Malcolm being the only main to have a personality. The movie drags because there's no value in anything the movie does aside from the action sequences, which means that when these aren't happening, you're basically looking at a glorified loading screen that takes ages to get through. People who genuinely claim that the island part is good while the climax isn't are so full of shit they probably enjoy watching paint dry as long as it's their favorite color.
