Why did people used to enjoy watching cartoons before movies?

there was no internet and no/less tv. going to the movies was an evening's entertainment, hence cartoons, double bills, roadshows of 3+ hour long movies, etc. etc.

now newly built movie theaters don't even have arcades because people just fuck around on their phones 24/7
