Happiness is my favorite film.
In the universe in which Happiness takes place, total aggregate happiness almost always remains in proportion with the number of people in the universe; the ratio of people to happiness does not change. Happiness cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be acquired or relinquished. If it is acquired, then someone else lost happiness. If it is relinquished, then someone else gained happiness.
Bill gets happiness, his sons friend loses it.
Joy gets happiness while playing guitar and singing "happiness", her sister call and takes it away.
You can go on down the list and find countless examples of this. But there are two exceptions:
Once when Joy ends it with Vlad, and once when Allen and Kristina are in bed together.
Joys happiness is later stripped from her in the final scene, and whatever happiness Allen and Kristina created together is taken away when we discover that Kristina is sent to prison.
The final scene really hammers this idea home for me. It seems that Billy Maplewood has created happiness by cumming. Only the dog licks his cum, then proceeds to enter the dining room and lick his mother on her face. She is, in a literal sense, affected by Billy's happiness. And the response by the family reinforces this idea that happiness cannot be created in this universe, at least not usually.
Im on my mobile so the formatting is fucked and there are probably lots of grammatical errors but goddamn I love this movie.
