Iranian here. A Separation might be the most realistic depiction of how middle-class and lower-class lives differ in Iran. I would check Fahadi's earlier work (About Eli) and other directors' work (Makhmalbaf, Panahi, Kiarostami).

The directors I mentioned have found a "formula", if you will, that tells an original Iranian story and wins international awards at the same time. With Farhadi, I feel it's kinda different because he puts a tremendous amount of time and effort into researching, building realistic characters (i.e. people you might meet on the streets of Iran).
