Remember when he said on twitter that the leaked pictures of him doing shows with Letterman and Seinfeld like 6 months ago were photoshopped fakes?

Why is he such a pathological liar, and why the hell did he take so long to release these old episodes?

It's like the Larry King episode.
Some episodes (especially with the dirty comics) are hilarious and some are pretty clean with guests that are rarely interviewed. Nobody else could get Letterman and Norm had to tone it down for his sake.

I enjoyed the closeups desu. No other show does that. It feels like Norm made the cameraman do it for a bit...
>>
>>85462099

It's something complete hacks always ask creative people. It's sort of an in joke with comedians because they have all heard it a thousand times from some interviewer or fan. Scott Aukerman does the same joke on Comedy Bang Bang. Stephen King has made lots of jokes about it in a couple of his books too.

>>85466010
I'll admit I'm being a bit cynical. I think I read conan was a writer on SNL at one point when they were actually good. Still though, these talk show guys have never been particularly funny or interesting in my opinon. Being frank, conan is one of the more tolerable ones but late night is filled to the brim with absolute shit. Kimmel, Colbert, seth myers (who the fuck actually watches him), Carson Daly, etc. I'd like to say it was always more or less this way because when I watch old hosts, they seem pretty dry apart from Johnny Carson who had some charm to him, yet people will kick and scream that the all the oldies were legends.
>>
>>85465659
>I don't like them but of course they're legends
THATS THE PROBLEM

why are they legends? There were people even at the time who were more charming and funny than both of those people
>>
>>85466134
He looks thinner but much older. He probably just lost a lot and didn't bother getting new clothes, but having them be so baggy on him is something I associate with the illness and frailness of someone who lost a lot quickly due to cancer or something.

Adam is bigger but he carries it in such a way that is makes him look tough.
>>
>>85466228
Prime 80s Letterman was GOAT tier. Plus back then, late night shows were more of an institution than they are now. Norm is right in this episode. All of the current late night shows follow pretty much the same template.
>>
>>85466156

>close ups

>literally cutoff the end of the episode where Dave was going to do a top 10
is this the blunder of the century? I can't believe people have been waiting almost a year for this to come back.
>>
>>85466169
I think if Colbert took the show and himself more seriously he could make something happen. He has the presence and command of a room of someone who can do this, but none of the respectability. He also used to be a writer. Aside from him and Conan though you are right, they're just a bunch of goofballs who have no business interviewing anybody.
>>
Lotta children ITT. Dave is a legend, and hearing him tell personal stories about his life and career with Norm is comfy, funny and insightful. If there's not enough memes, you don't actually get Norm's humor.

You're minimizing the impact that people like Letterman or Bob Hope or Dick Cavett or Carson had on the medium of television itself.

They don't just fit the "host" category their shows were institutions. Before the 1990s talk shows and interview shows were different.

Letterman picked up where Carson left off. You can see it if you watch Letterman's appearances on Carson in the mid 80s, how he's going to the next step. There was no "alternative comedy" on regular TV until Dave or arguably SCTV.

Theoretically you can say Conan picked up where Letterman left off, but anyone past Conan or Craig Ferguson probably sucks at hosting anyway so that's kind of where it ends...

You don't even have to be oldfag to youtube old Carson and Letterman clips and see the difference. I recommend watching old late night before bed its very comfy and won't make you vomit like Seth Meyers.
>>
>>85467130
Some nights I actually dream of seeing old Letterman shows on TV and then I wake up and wonder why the hell all those shows are lost to time now. I know the Carson shows are kept in a vault and NBC owns the rights to Late Night and Letterman owns the rights to the Late Show but it's a crime that all that comedy is locked away never to be seen again.
>>
>>85466273
He looks healthier compared to his big fat face from the earlier episodes of NML.
>>
This episode felt scripted as a mother fucker.

I wonder if that was intentional by Norm, or if it something that Letterman wanted.
>>
>>85467207
Anon there are a few Youtubers who have uploaded thousands of hours of old Dave and Carson(I'm in no way associated with the accounts but that's how I started watching them). A Canadian network was airing 80s Dave reruns into the 90s and I assume the clips are ripped vhs.

I've watched Seth Myers a few times and his opening monologue is actually pretty funny, but his interviews are fucking dull as shit.

But honestly whenever I watch an episode of late night when someone I like is the guest I always end up wishing I could just watch the interview on youtube because they're always uploaded there anyways and the guests don't come out for like 45 minutes sometimes. I swear the commercial breaks are longer than the interviews.

Craig Ferguson managed to make the entire show entertaining though, which is a testament to his talent. He could make me watch an episode where no one I've even heard of are the guests, just because he's that funny. None of the current late night hosts can do that.

Big beards are distracting the same way big tits are. You just feel compelled to look at them. I've grown out a big beard and it changes everyones perception and behaviour towards you. It's polarising though, girls mostly hate it but some girls go absolutely mental for a big beard.

Kek i was thinking about that too, was it that the top 10 below the apple where beyond the reach of those that had not bitten the forbidden fruit?only those that had fell for the temptation had access to it and us, the audience remain pure having our last LAST memory of a top 10 be on the Letterman Show itself?

They sacrificied themselves for us and for this i'll never forget them.
>>
>>85472998
Possibly, but the way Norm immediately dismissed Dave's assertion that he is smart, and immediately launched into a joke when the sincerity started flowing is very telling to me. I feel that Norm doesn't want to walk in Dave's footsteps because in his mind Dave is still standing there (hence Norm pushing the idea that Dave should continue in some way), whereas Dave made it abundantly clear that not only is he done with the gig, he believes Norm could handle it with ease. As I said before though, I don't think Norm is willing and/or able to do that right now.

Normie was trying to say he can't "talk to everybody/anybody". I'm sure he can, he just does not want to. Imagine some GOT faggot or faggotess infront of Norm telling him some garbage 5 nights a week?

Maybe Norm could do it once a week and be more choosey with his guests
>>
I hate the way people dismiss episodes based on their own interpretation of behind the scenes or the attitude of Norm/the guest, just watch them all and enjoy for fuck's sake.
>The guest didn't laugh at every little thing Norm did, they obviously don't understand humor at all and Norm obviously hates them

Listen to Lettermans podcast with Alec Baldwin. Letterman goes into the full details of his life and how he got started in radio and the vietnam war and all kinds of shit.
>>
>>85475212
https://www.wnyc.org/story/216217-david-letterman/

David Letterman began his Late Night gig as a self-described “gap-toothed, unknown smart ass.” But thirty highly successful years later, Letterman’s comedy formula has evolved: he no longer attends all the meetings or makes all the decisions and stupid pet tricks are a thing of the past.

Letterman began his television career as a weatherman, but moved rapidly up to anchorman and talk show host. He left for L.A. and, after only three years on the comedy scene there, he found himself guest-hosting the Tonight Show. He talks to Alec about how a quintuple by-pass and the birth of a child have dramatically shifted Letterman’s priorities.

I think you're right about that, with that being one of the reasons I'm alluding to about Norm not being willing/able to fill that role. I can't remember which guest said it, but they were right that an online podcast is the perfect way for Norm to do what he wants to do. I sometimes wonder if Norm understands that what he's doing now is just as valid as if he were doing it on TV (at least to the people who are actively watching it) or if he feels unfulfilled or illegitimate doing an online only show.

The way he (doesnt) talk about his podcast on his twitter makes me think he isnt interested in it beyond getting the ad money and hanging out with interesting people. I dont think he thinks its respectable, but I could be wrong. He has an overt lack of confidence.

I felt bad when Letterman said he was on SSRIs, I know Conan is too. I hope I don't need that shit, please god just let me be functionally fucked up.

Happy to share the little gem that I think noone knows about my man.

Alec Baldwins podcast is one of the best. Just listen to the people you know of and skip the rest. Seinfeld, Billy Joel, Letterman, Sarah Jessica Parker, they're memorable ones. Billy Joel is a cool dude.

It's tough to read the situation because if it was someone like Seinfeld hosting this show, they would talk openly and honestly about why they do it and what it means to them. Norm invites all sorts of intrigue and analysis of what he might be thinking, when the answer is probably much simpler than we could imagine but still unquestionably private to him.

>>85475519
It's like the story Norm told about seeing the psychiatrist who told him to stop joking around, then once he didn't have jokes to fall back on he broke down. The way Norm juked Letterman's compliment by immediately firing off into a couple jokes wasn't Norms way of disregarding it, it actually shows just how much those words meant to him.

When Norm asked Letterman "Why don't half of people walk around with a noose on their necks" in such a sudden and calm manner really fucked me up, it was such a serious moment and the fact that Letterman engaged him on such a serene manner only made it more intense.

Christ almighty. What a goldmine. Thanks anon

This might be me getting ahead of myself but I was kind of disappointed they didn't discuss Gary Shandling. I feel like Letterman would have something interesting to say about Larry Sanders Show since it was at least partly a pastiche of him

>Letterman talking about being a gameshow host
>Says that Pat Sajak probably wants to kill himself all the time despite making a great living

This was an interesting moment to me because hey maybe I'm wrong but wasn't Letterman phoning it in throughout the whole 2000s? When Jay Leno beat him in the ratings and there was no coming back a part of Letterman just clearly died off to me and he stopped doing surreal humor allowing Late Show to just be a bunch of toothless gags.

I don't know maybe Dave really loved the show and I'm just rationalizing my own dislike towards his latter career but it seemed to me he treated it no differently than how Sajak hosts Wheel of Fortune. A job's a job you know.

Was the thing about moving the podcast to netflix ever legit or people were just memeing around?

I thought about that, but they clearly shot it before there was any deal. Maybe as a pilot to shop around, hence the heavy editing.

It seems a lot more commercialized now which is disappointing. there was like 15 minutes of Norm shilling sponsors and clearly a lot of editing to make sure it was exactly 1 hour long. I have a feeling there will be less funny jokes so they don't scare away more sponsors.

I'm placing all my hopes and dreams on the Sarah Silverman episode. There's 20 years of pent up sexual aggression brewing in Norm.
>>
It was never going to be the kind of funny like swardson impersonating don knotts fucking somebody up the ass, it was more like an evolution of the preceding episode (hader) which was just a great talk.

Norm is kind of accidentally getting better at being an interviewer. Letterman does not bust out a Nixon impression/talk about making up stuff in therapy unless he's comfortable and has someone guiding the direction of the show. Norm was like a ballet dancer in this regard, exacting in his quiet probing of dave ('so how did you leave indiana for a job that didn't exist?') and minimal but brilliant in his joke outbursts/non-sequiturs like the story of the guy not wanting to give up cigarettes. It was a poignant sorta-shaggy-dog that had dave's eyes twinkling and seriously asking why he didn't put THAT in the book.

So while he's getting better at being an interviewer just by osmosis/time, because of his personality and stories such as the church one he is forever seperated from Maron & the other podcasting duds that long ago ran out of ways to make it unselfishly funny for both the guest and interviewer. It's like the Super Dave season premiere is his floor, if he wants at anytime he can make an episode that funny. He's just learning a few new talents that occasionally take the interviews elsewhere.

Thought the closeups were great because we see Dave's santa beard never ending in the screen, webbing the corners, and then Norm's blushing cherubic face. This was the ultimate and perhaps final step up from the unlit cigs, a gag Norm seemed to relish more than anyone else.
>>
>>85484642
Hopefully Norm will finally get to take her out for a beef steak and then lay down on top of her.
>>
>>85484687
He also had like a nervous euphoria playing a host interviewing his hero guest, which was startlingly modest. Maybe flashes of rushed, shy Norm in his mid 20's living and dying by his rotely memorized but still brilliant jokes. Same as with him questioning dave now, way back when he was before an audience he wanted adoration from, and after his years of accumulation he is free to sit alone and write (and maybe panic about death) as he is free to sit for the final five minutes of this episode to hear dave's unrestrained praise and respond with silence and a joke. Thus is Norm.

The ending I don't doubt was also Norm's idea and the best of the series. Kauffman-esque? Norm's devilish insistance on less-is-more: punchline is best when it repeats the joke, steinbeck/hemingway-like prose in his writing? Or just the enigmatic Norm, the Norm who worships Becker's Denial of Death, who knows and ponders his own version of an immortality project...

Ever since the first half of the Merchant episode NML has been on a ridiculous tear. I think we will get plenty swardson style eps and some more Letterman/Hader style. Can't wait for whatever comes next Tuesday.
