I never really realized that such auctions was a common enough thing that there was as steady trade in it. Figured most of the clothing went to a costume/prop house to be used in other productions.

That might be the case for most stuff on ebay, not just movie stuff.

I know back in the day of film projection there was a ton of sketchy people that you could rent films for special viewings.

yeah it depends but generally each season of a show has it's own art and wardrobe budgets, so they just buy everything with the studios money at the beginning. The art department then normally will either do what this production did sell the key wardrobes and props to a distributor, and they probably did a local garage sale type of thing to get rid of all the other gak.

And I know that at least on the Sony lots there are warehouses that are just full of shit that was bought for other productions, and is never recycled, and is just rotated out after 10 years or whatever. Every production just buys their own shit.

> a Steadicam person with the Vista Vision camera strapped to his chest ran backwards in front of Young Ellie as he goes up the stairs and down the hallway – there was a speed change – we ramp from 24 to 48fps (though I can’t remember exactly – we could have ramped through three different speeds) – by the time she stops and puts her hand to open the medicine cabinet door (“A” plate ) – we are then inside the reflection. The medicine cabinet was the “B” plate (second plate) and then the door closes and we have the “C” plate (third plate) which was the reflection of the photo of Young Ellie and her dad. By the way – the first time we received this CGI shot as a final (completed & ready to be signed off) Bob Z noticed that the picture frame did not match the one in the Arecibo Puerto Rico bedroom with older Ellie and Joss so they had to have an insert crew reshoot the “C” plate with the correct picture frame and re-composite the shot over again – not an easy thing to do since timing was critical in getting everything to match up.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/kirsten-dunst-reveals-how-she-gained-weight-for-fargo-role-20151310

>“I gained weight for this role," the 33-year-old actress, who also used Jane Iredale cosmetics on set, told Kimmel. "But really, I just sat in my bed, watched Friday Night Lights and, like, ate."

>"I was in Calgary,” she continued. “It was cold, so I ordered in a lot of pizza [and] grilled cheese. I just had different cheeses and breads together." She didn’t mind gaining the weight, or plugging Season 2 of the hit show, either.

>"It's nice to, like, promote something and not have to lie about it," Dunst said of the anthology series, which is set in South Dakota and Minnesota in 1976 for this season.

>In August, Dunst revealed to Town & Country that another role, in the upcoming film Woodshock, required her to lose 10 pounds in two weeks. "I am a girl who loves to go out to eat — it's one of my joys in life,” she told the magazine, before adding that she needed to shed fast because her character has to “look a little ill."

I'm not a Malick fan (in the sense that I don't care about his movies really) except for Thin Red Line. I hate how it gets shit on here more often than not. I've seen a ton of war movies, it's legit one of the better ones.

I am not one of those Malick folks who think everything he makes is great.

he made two great movies back in the 1970s (Days of Heaven, Badlands), What I could argue is the best war movie ever (Thin Red Line, it is at least my top three), The rest is just okay or not the usual stuff.

Also I hated Thin Red line in 1998. I thought the movie was about taking that ridge. When it was anything but that.

(to be fair, not seen The New World or Knight of Cups)

Each season is focused on hitting on different themes from Coen brothers movies. A Serious Man and The Big Lebowski are the 2 biggest references for that part. Big Lebowski obviously for the bowling alley scene with an omniscient god narrator guy, and A Serious Man on account of the old testament irony and vengeful jew ghosts.
>Is the Fargoverse actually hell?
Well since the other primary movie being referenced is Barton Finch, where the setting IS literally hell, maybe?

But each season varies. S2 is pretty much explicitly about godless absurdism and existentialism and whatever. The inciting acting and turning point in the climax is caused by aliens fucking with us as a goof.
>>
>>85465032
I got Season 1 and Season 2

Season 1 was the old Good vs Evil, Predator vs Prey thing.

Season 2 was subtler about communication. Everyone wasn't able to talk to each other so they fought. The ayys were just the ultimate representation of the inability to communicate. Something truly alien that nothing gets across.
I liked Season 2 a lot.

Season 3's raison d'etre still evades me. It's about stories? That theme keeps coming back but it also says stories are true and then stories are bullshit.
Are stories true? Are they bullshit?
Maybe it's just saying that stories are just stories and that's all that matters

Yeah like the biggest references this season makes are seemingly Big Lebowski, Serious Man, Barton Fink, and Burn After Reading. All of which are kind of specifically about "well what did we learn?....nothing huh" kind of thing. Lebowski's plot is intentionally muddled and wanders off with the ultimate point of "well wasn't that something." Serious Man has the fucking tooth parable and tornado at the end. Barton Fink ends with the painting inexplicably playing out, etc.

Honestly yeah there's obvious Cain and Abel stuff and Varga is basically the devil and bar guy is basically old testament god and whatever but the point is defintely not as dialed in. Wonder how much it had to do with Hawley being more focused on whimsical xmen.
>>
>>85465632
I think Vargas was a commentary on Season 2. He kept speaking in other languages and telling stories.
Like, he was saying that language itself was bullshit and full of lies.
That seems to follow in with the "true" fading out of the credits.
All stories are lies?

But in the first opening, we see that "Yuri" was full of shit. He really did murder her.

I don't know. Maybe you're right and it's not my failing that I can't see a clear message.
Or maybe I'm just drunk as shit as I always am when I watch TV.

>But in the first opening, we see that "Yuri" was full of shit. He really did murder her.
I already feel like I need to rewatch because I'm just picking up on what was going on there. "Yuri" in the beginning scene was someone that had been set up by Yuri and whoever at the time was helping Yuri, to eat shit for his crimes. The person being interviewed in the prologue isn't full of shit, they're innocent. But the gubment interrogating "Yuri" to cover the war crimes was full of shit. So the rabbi or whatever is actually some kind of investigator or hitman nazi hunter type.

I mean going back to the wolves in a society of sheep theme that the movie (and no country) and season 1 were more explicitly about, Yuri is shown LITERALLY dressed like a wolf at one point. And in the end he's taken out by a vengeful shepherd from a past life. But yeah everything Yuri does is in support of and supported by lies, so that's interesting. And he disappears with a jarring cut to a bunch of angry jew ghosts to hit that home. So I get that whole shebang a lot more. Don't get why the jewghostrabbissassin was on the plane from LA to MN with Coon other than coincidence. I guess Yuri or Vargas somehow pinged as being in MN and he just happened to be on the way? And he knew they'd try to hit the prison bus and MEW and HW plainview would escape and make it to the bowling alley after beheading that funny looking fella etc. Fair enough I guess.

And then Stussy's whole tragedy is that basically everything just explodes around him and he's kind of being constantly manipulated by "the gods" in his passion to become one.
>Like, he was saying that language itself was bullshit and full of lies.
So yeah totally this. He did have a million dollars, some big trucks, and like 4 guys, a bunch of poison and weapons and whatever at his disposal, but other than that all that it's left intentionally ambiguous whether or not he was full of shit the entire time.

The first Yuri, from the intro, made it out like he was innocent.
And he seemed innocent
But when he was taken away by the guards, we see that his feet were fully of snow and slush, despite him saying that he has been an innocent prisoner for days.
The first Yuri was full of shit and he really killed that woman.

I don't know what the 3rd season was going on about.
Was it lies? Or honest? Or innocence?
I think it was just stories are all we have and it doesn't matter whether they are true or not.
First Yuri paid his price for lying.
Second Yuri bragged about this murders and loved his Cossack raider heritage. Despite telling the truth, he died too.
Emmit died.
Ray died.
Sy got a glancing blow of death for lying.

I think Season 3 was about how stories were bullshit.
Like how Detective QT Coon's grandfather tried to live while telling stories and got fucked by them. And fucked others by it.

I think Season 3 was about how stories make our lives. We all follow stories and we get upset when life does not follow them.
Like the sci-fi writer Stussey got upset when he was just played.
Or Ray became a loser and didn't want that life any more
Or how Emmit wasn't really the hero everyone thought he was
Or how QT Coon wasn't recognized by anyone

yeah I was already writing a bunch when i saw you had replied but we're thinking of the same shit.

Plus it's 2010, about someone that basically had to sell their soul to the devil because of the financial crisis. Language, power, currency, it's all just bullshit huh.

Also episode titles include Law of Inevitability, which totally applies to the Yuri plot and Enis Stussy kinda. Plus Mr. Wrench coming back into play to save MEW to lead Yuri to the jewghosts, it's all a series of consequences kind of. Had an alien space ship not caused a crazy woman to hit and run and murderer, MEW would have never led a war criminal to his judgement day if you think about it.

But also Rabbi Nachman is a reference to a guy that advocated for talking to God "in normal conversation." So yeah they are all mostly people being judged for the lies they tell about themselves. OH and fucking Ray is a parole officer. People piss their lies on his shoes all day. And Emmit didn't die right? He's the schlemiel. Ray is the schlemazel.

I don't get MEW's cosmic arc though.

what does this show look so fucking disgusting

i get "it's ye olden times and the only way we can express this is through a filter" but why do you have to make it all look like fucking garbage?
>>
>>85467871
I don't think that Yuri (thug for based Vargas) really was a war criminal.
He was young. Thirties. He was 10, at most, when the Soviet Union was at thing.

Like I said above, it's about stories. This Yuri styled himself a Cossack and paid the price of Cossacks. Those old Jews were 100+ year old styled.

I think Wrench got out because he was deaf and therefore unable to listen to stories. Stories fuck people. Wrench was deaf and could not listen. So he got out OK
He got MEW's story through personal relation. No stories involved.
>>
>>85467962
It's not olden times.

I think it looks like "garbage" because their lives are garage

>the first Yuri was really guilty

I don't know why I didn't even consider it but I like that a lot. But why would the Jew in the bowling alley make second Yuri see Helga though if he didn't kill her?
>>
>>85468326
Was the woman we see haunt second Yuri really the same Helga we see in the intro?
>>
>>85468491
Same first and last name at least iirc. The intro scene also specifically names Yuri Gurka but the other fella could have still been guilty I guess.

For one thing it's a land of vast brown tundras and shitty overcast and snow. The show always has a gross northern winter aesthetic.
>i get "it's ye olden times and the only way we can express this is through a filter"
plus that takes place in 2010. s1 seemed brighter but s2 and most of s3 have been browns and neutrals.
>but why do you have to make it all look like fucking garbage?
Definitely not something noticeable when you're watching the show. It's part of the tone and point.
>>85468014
>>I don't think that Yuri (thug for based Vargas) really was a war criminal.
Everything I'm reading is making it seem much more apparent that I remember. They mention the name of a woman and he mentions that it happens to be the same first name as his wife, who should be alive.
>He was young. Thirties. He was 10, at most, when the Soviet Union was at thing.
So if he's the actors age, he's 36 in 2010. So he'd be like 40 or so if he was 20 in 1990 or whenever.

But the East German scene is very Orwell. I think what is being implied is that the dude did kill his wife and knows he is fucked, and is only really protesting why they're calling him Yuri Gurgan. And the East Germans, covering up whatever scandal Yuri caused and fled from, were using authoritarianism logic to coerce the guy to stop protesting when they call him Yuri. He's telling him what the "truth" is. They've shown him the body, he understands that his life is over. It is both the show telling us the point, but it's also demonstrating that the official "truth" can be bullshit. Yuri officially disappeared into the Soviet prison system, so his Nachman comeuppance I guess is compounded for him proudly equating whatever shit he's done to the Cossacks and so on.

>I think Wrench got out because he was deaf and therefore unable to listen to stories.
4sho. Only bridge bw all 3 season is the only one that doesn't talk and can't hear.

He did kill his wife. But he wasn't Yuri. They were knocking out a two birds with one stone. It's Burn After Reading but for the soviets. It's like the final scene in Burn After Reading that happens to settle whatever the fuck happened before but doesn't really settle anything. Hence why a Vengeful rabbi assassin shows up and disappears the russian hitman randomly in episode 8.

It's also a commentary about the nature or meaning of official "truth." We generally see how the crimes are processed by optimistic uncorruptible alpha women encounter monstrous shit. The "truth" of Fargo is always filtered through the lens of a minnesota-nice maternal woman. The "truth" of the narrative coming out of the prologue is as filtered through some bureaucrat with other bigger motives, manipulating the little guy when the little guy fucks up. It's a pretty solid thesis for the story now that I think about tbphwyf.

I mean it narratively added a lot to the story in that it's used in a creative way to tell the audience that the dad died, by having the third part of the shot that you see when the mirror closes of the picture of the father.

Plus it's a movie about a Carl Sagan book and the relativity of time and sfpace. We see her character literally violate our relative understanding of space and teleporting us years into the future (I think). Her transcending the rules of time and space to contact her dad is literally what she's doing and literally what the rest of the movie is about.

its pretty dope if we're being rural about it.

Hm. I like this scene now that I'm watching it in isolation. The top's spinning, and he probably wants it to keep spinning so he can confidently feel like his life has just been one bad dream and off himself. But it topples over and he's shit outta luck. Tfw no exposition feelsgoodman.

lol Travolta was in it? I literally just found out that that might be Jared Leto from that guy's webm. Mallick is a madman. I feel like years from now I'm still going to be finding out about actors that were in his films for five seconds. Kinda great if you ask me. Gets all the prestige and promotional power of huge stars but films them in a way that doesn't focus on them, and they end up looking like just a bunch of soldiers with unmemorable faces. Sucks for his financiers and the actors tho. God bless you Terry keep making this stuff and triggering actors.

Aren't grenade fuses way shorter than that? Why was that explosion so huge? And why does it look like the center of the explosion is so far away from his body? Was he wearing some kind of c4 suicide vest that flew off of him right before the grenades wnet off and then blew up when they did? Even if they fell out of his hands, I don't see two distinct blasts from the grenades. The hell.

pro-tip, people don't fly *anywhere* when they get shot. The movement is due to the body jerking from muscle spasms and losing balance.

Yeah, look at the cast list.

One of the actors was under the impression he was the lead role, as he shot enough stuff for a six hour movie, cut it to 4, then cut it to under 3 for release.

>In addition to the cast seen in the final cut of the film, Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas, and Mickey Rourke also performed but their scenes were eventually cut. Billy Bob Thornton recorded narration that was scrapped. Martin Sheen and Viggo Mortensen participated in readthroughs of the script and are thanked in the end credits.[14] Editor Leslie Jones was on location for five months and rarely saw Malick, who left her to her own devices.[15] After principal photography wrapped, she came back with a five-hour first cut and spent seven months editing, with Thornton contributing three hours of narrative voice-over material.

>The editing also resulted in many of the well-known cast members being on screen for only a brief period: for example, John Travolta and George Clooney's appearances are little more than cameos, yet Clooney's name appears prominently in the marketing of the movie. The unfinished film was screened for the New York press on December 1998 and Adrien Brody attended a screening to find that his originally significant role, "to carry the movie",

Since some of the actors are much bigger stars now then in 2015 and are still under contract for reasonable terms for a follow up there is serious talk they might do a 2nd movie.
