It's a bizarrely atonal movie because it pairs scenes of ULTRA-REALISTIC GORY THIS-IS-HOW-IT-WAS COMBAT with a level of mawkishness that would have felt corny and crudely manipulative even by the standards of a '40s propaganda movie. And Saving Private Ryan actually vacillates between the two extremes on a scene-by-scene basis, so you get gritty combat, then schmaltzy bullshit, then something disturbing, then something saccharine, etc. etc.

It can't help but feel like a dishonest mess. People who praise it usually reduce it to the combat scenes.
