It really made me think about Larry Silverstein's sudden absence from work on 9/11. That scene after Uncle Ben drops off Peter and reflects on the day Larry fired him (upon discovering the details of his insurance policy hidden in a manilla folder behind an electric generator) did an stupendous job of making the viewer empathize with Uncle Ben and grow attached to his character, thus making his eventual death all the more tragic. Well done, Raimi.

Yes. Spider man will never transition from the comics to the film well if you try to completely replicate the comics, so doing your own thing like Raimi did is the best way to handle the character. He was smart enough to realize that Spiderman comics (besides having great villains and characters) don't have that memorable of stories like batman does, and is not that well written, so you have to do your own thing with the characters to a degree.

Yeah, the CGI really hurts it. The webbing should be a bit darker. I think the black bars were meant to break up all the red, so they probably couldn't figure out a way to lay the webbing. It's an all right suit, but the CGI necessary to make it "work" almost makes it look super fake. Damn shame. There's not one instance in Homecoming where the suit looks real, even though I know someone's wearing it. One of the things I like most about the Raimi films (and the comics I guess) is that Spider-man is a controversial figure. The Daily Bugle slanders him in their papers and we get those snippets of people's different opinions on him. This also makes it more poignant when civilians help him. This was briefly touched upon in Amazing Spiderman but forgotten about in 2 and missing from Homecoming where everyone just loves Spider-man

It was alright, I guess, but 2002 sure was a different time. I went into this movie knowing that director Sam Raimi belongs to the radical political fringe, but I'll admit I was still shocked when the character Green Goblin went on a three-minute monologue about the "Hollywood kikes" and their "faggot agenda." It almost seemed like Raimi was using the movie's villain as a platform for his own hateful views. Don't even get me started on the over-use of "nigger" in this film either...I know Raimi and Tarantino have a running bet as to who can insert more racial slurs into a single film, but hearing that word repeatedly come out of Spider-man's mouth just really broke immersion. Between these instances and Uncle Ben's horrific first-person Vietnam flashback, this is not a movie I would be comfortable with letting my 10 year old boy see.

I agree with this. The sequels have potential. I do have issues that go beyond the characters, but it'll help if they can have Peter's character grow into the one we're familiar with. Right now, it's like a kid playing pretend, and while I understand that that's the point, it isn't done well enough for me to enjoy it. Spider-Man's best stories are typically during his college years anyway.
