Well, not really. Game of Thrones has a lot more badass women, like the Dornish snakes, Cersei, Dany, Sansa, Arya, etc. and is also a little more realistic (battles, ships, castles etc)

Lucius and Titus had probably the best on screen bromance of all time. How Titus keeps fucking up and making mistakes, how Lucius keeps trying to help him and sort him out even thought he doesn't believe in doing so as is trying to do what should be right and what he thinks is right. Their adventures, running into the fucking eagle, being shipwrecked then running into fucking Pompei, it was wonderful experience watching the show, also I love the way armors make noise in the show, rubbing leathers etc

What bothered you about Cicero? I've read quite a lot about him and I thought their depiction of him, historical inaccuracies on some of the specifics aside, was absolutely brilliant. It really does portray him as the man caught between two worlds that he was. He was from a relatively low background, but had worked his way up to the highest circles of the Republic as a phenomenal orator, beaten Catiline and become de facto moderate leader in the senate. Everything he does in the show is governed less by any real love for the nobility, of which he is not truly part as a 'novus homo', but for a desire for stability.

Can some /his/torian explain why cato and pompey wanted to oust Caesar at the start of the series?

It seemed like Caesar did nothing wrong yet they labeled him a criminal for no reason, leading caesar to actually take over rome
>>
>>85437404
Rome had very recently had tyrants take over and declare themselves dictator. They rightly saw Caesar as an even more dangerous new example.
He wasn't even meant to be in Gaul conquering it, that in itself was a dangerous powergrab, his huge success culminating in leading a ridiculously loyal army back into Italy was a crisis to all his political enemies (like Cato). Pompey was just the establishment man, the greatest living general and so the responsibility fell upon him to sort Caesar out, but before the events of the show they were friends.
>>
>>85429617
No it's not.
>>
>>85430584
lmao
>>
>>85437404
Caesar was part of the Populares (populist) faction in the senate and a power-hungry young genius, with no regard for tradition or established rules if circumventing them furthered his ambitions, Cato was a hardcore conservative and part of the Optimates faction who absolutely despised him because of this. Pompey was also a part of the Populares for a long time and worked together with Caesar, but switched to the Optimates after the death of Crassus. It became more and more evident that Caesar's power was unmatched, so he saw the opportunity to rebrand himself as Caesar's greatest foe and defender of republican virtues, even though he was just as ambitious as Caesar and spend, just like him, most of his life undermining the stability of the old system.
>>
>>85434020
You don't know what a documentary is idiot.
>>
>>85437404
Pompey was jealous of Caesar's success in Gaul, and didn't want to be overshadowed by him.

Cato was scared Caesar was going to declare himself king and end the republic. Caesar was also having affair with his half sister.

>>
>>85436229
What bothers me is that they portrayed Cato as a patrician
>>
>>85439005
I'm not sure they needed more seasons but the way the second felt rushed towards the end annoyed me.
>>
>>85439245
They should make a prequel series set between Sulla and the victory at Alesia
>>
>>85439377
I'm bothered not only by the fact they made Cato so old, but also that they softened his death. The real Cato was revived and stitched up after stabbing himself, when he wakes up he gets mad at his doctor for ruining his suicide and pulls his stitches out.
>>
>>85439379
And it's 10 years from the death of Brutus to the death of Mark Anthony.
Looks like season 2 was originally seasons 2 and 3. The remaining two would be about a campaign against the Germanic tribes and the something in Judea I guess. Honestly they already showed the most important bits. A show with a title like Rome could be 20 seasons long.

Is it fair to say that with the death of Mark Antony Rome was mostly free from internal conflicts between ambitious generals etc. and later dangers came mostly from outside? It's not like Rome was peaceful as lots of emperors were murdered but there was no more triumvirates and nothing that would match the rivalry between Gaius Julius/Pompey Magnus or Octavian/Mark Antony.
I think it was a good way to end the show.

Caesar pulled so much illegal shit during his career he had to keep having a political position in order not to get prosecuted and executed for what he did, that's part of the reason behing the whole Gaul expedition which was at first meant as some border dipsute between tribes, but Caesar ended conquering the whole fucking place (WITHOUT ORDERS FROM THE SENATE) in order to keep his military command and rack up prestige.

Then part of the senate got fed up with his shit and feared he would then kill the republic, proclaim himself king or some shit to keep power, they told him to renounce his military command, Caesar wouldn't have it and he crossed the Rubicon with his armies making him effectively an enemy of the state.

If you want a good read/ fiction dealing with romans, try the Clash of Eagles series. Basic plot for book 1: >Roman Empire never collapsed
>in 1300s, they discover the Americas
>send several legions to conquer the new land in search of rumored gold
>through guerilla warfare, poison, attrition, and tactics the Romans aren't prepared for, the vast majority of the legion is wiped out and the leader is captured by one of the tribes
>instead of one of those bullshit stories where he sees how noble they are and becomes one of them, he gets the idea to introduce roman culture, technology, and tactics to them, romanizing the barbarians, so that when the empire finally does conquer them, he'll be made governor of the Americas

Oswald Spengler described how each great Empire will eventually fall. The only one he got wrong was the British Empire, which was not lost through war or rebellion, but through them giving everybody Self-Determination. If you want to be technical, the Commonwealth is essentially an Empire of it's own. If you want to go even less technical, the Queen is legal Head of State of 16 countries still. If you want to ignore that, Britain has a dozen or so oversea territories as well.

If we apply Spenglers definitions (and granted he wrote his shit in 1929, where the idea of a global connected information highway was a fucking genius' dream let alone a reality) then the American Empire (if you can call it an Empire) is in it's Winter stage. Which is turmoil at home, insane levels of surveillance on your citizens and restrictions of freedoms and other junk.

As it is, the fact that USA isn't in a civil war right now over Trump proves that it's unlikely to ever happen anyway. So Spengler might be wrong once again.

Spartacus has some good old-fashioned scheming in Roman senate. I was expecting them to focus only on the rebellion. Good movie.

Ben-Hur (1959) is one of my all time favorite movies but only a part of the movie takes place in Rome. It's all good though. Probably the best subplot.

I need to watch The Fall of the Roman Empire as it's apparently another classic.

This, it's also boring as fuck.
I mean I watched the Wire and sometimes it was quite long but in the Sopranos everything is stretched to the max, the whole late 90s psychanalysis thing was just unnecessary.

True, but it's mostly because Rome came too early, it would have had 5 seasons if it came in the 10s.

USA is nowhere near it's winter stage.
Surveillance levels are laughable by historical standards, downright lax by modern ones.

I'm speaking as a french dude who lost his empire 3 generations of superpowers ago.

It's a geopolitician's favorite game to predict the end but every fucking fast rising nation since ww2 was forecast to overshadow the US and they can't. Growth hits diminishing returns and no one quite knows how to surpass the US the same way the US dominated eveyone post ww2.

Everyone thought Japan was going to do it in the 80s, pop culture was obsessed by it and they stalled. China is slowing down the same way.

If you check IMF gdp growth rates and consensus population growth projections, right now india is actually growing faster and is projected to take over china in population and industrial output.

Honestly the age of the undisputable superpower really looks over; that model only works with large parts of undiscovered and undeveloped lands (colonization, conquest etc...).

Rome was an economic pit, the only reason it endured was endless conquest and draining the ressources of the new provinces. French and british hegemony stayed stable only due to exploitation of colony's wealth using violent means.
US hegemony is based on free flow of capital and financial co-dependence. What would be the point of challenging such an order? It allows for emergent country to soar and when they "arrive" they join the ranks of decision makers in security matters.

Why would china "take over" or go to war? for fucking taiwan? please. Sounds boring but the future looks much less bleak than you might think.
