What I like about his movies is that he uses violence in a way that isn't unequivocally "awesome". He uses it in an entirely different way than most movies do today.

Really good thriller, didn't like it as much as Blue Ruin

I seriously hope the director drops the gimmicky naming scheme for his movies.

pretty good. I don't understand why they didn't just set fire to the building from the inside in order to get firefighters/police attention and instead just went leeroy jenkins at an army of skinheads. Weird that they had all that meth-making equipment that could've made a big boom that went to waste.

1. it's still daylight and someone could see the smoke
2. there are still non-criminal people inside that would call 911 before they cut the lights and clear the building
3. they have a better chance to escape in the ensuing chaos of the fire
4. better chance of survival for all of them
5. at least they destroy their base of operations and deal a significant financial blow to the skinheads
6. police will send investigators to the scene of the fire and see that it was intentional and it will end up with arrests

Saw it in theaters with a friend. Enjoyed it immensely. The director knows how to utilize gore without desensitizing you to it. The sense of dread from all the awful shit happening is really well paced through the whole film.

The film is not anti-white. Hell, the film isn't even exactly anti-nazi. There's no strong empowered minorities making wise cracks as they kill eval nazis, it's all a bunch of white kids in the pacific northwest, which makes skinheads the most logical choice for a scary, drug dealing gang to get roped into.

They also give the skinhead chick realistic motivation for joining them in the first place, and it doesn't just depict everyone who was at that bar/club as being an eval, racist, bloodthirsty murderer. Most had left, and many of the ones that did stay were simply afraid and manipulated by Stewart's character.
