Because, mercifully, there yet remain a few properties that Hollywood knows not to mar by such mistreatment. Better to re-release the thing on various media every five years and do the odd video game than to directly contrevene the art by means of a new feature.

Of course, this is a bit too charitable to Hollywood - if they saw the money, they'd do it with no hesitation.

People get mad when remakes are vastly inferior to the originals. Hollywood doesn't have the stones to remake these.

Scarface was better when it was remade. So was The Fly. Not sure why everyone is flouncing about ever so foppishly pretending that remakes of dumb garbage can never be better than the original.

Neither of those movies were considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time when they were remade. People won't remake The Godfather for the same reason that they won't remake Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Gone With the Wind, All About Eve, etc. The remakes of those movies could never live up to the originals.
