I just started watching GoT, I'm around sesaon 5 and I'm so fucking confused

Why does the show alwyas try to portray the North (Especially the Starks) as the main characters?
It kind of made sense in season 1~2 when the characters were actually powerful and had relevance
But after season 3, they have no army, they have no leader (Jon REDDIT Snow lol), all their generals are dead, Winterfell is in ruins, only young starks are alive

Why does the show keep portraying them as the main characters? They literally have 0 relevance especially since Daenarys is involved

Is this better explained in the books?
