What is the consensus on The Venture Bros? I've heard it's good but I just can't see anything topping Rick and Morty.
>>
VB was doing Rick and Morty's schtick way before it got popular and VB did it better. It's got the crazy niche references, the cynical comedy, the meta shit, the genre deconstruction, etc. The reason venture bros is better to me, is that it feels so effortless. Once season 2 hits, the show just keeps getting better. If the pilot seems bad, that's cause it is. Just keep going and you'll be rewarded with the best animated comedy adult swim has done. I fucking love venture bros.

The pilot has one of the most iconic scenes though.
>>
I never understood the popularity of it and figured it had something to do with drunk culture. Then I asked my brother who drinks a lot if it did anything for him after we watched most of an episode and he said no.
>>
>>85420450
Yeah, I gotta agree on that scene. I still think the pilot doesn't have enough of the humor VB is known for later on.
>>
>>85420727
Are you autistic?
>>
>>85419816
It's the best thing on Adult Swim but we don't talk about it because we don't want the newfags to ruin it. Delete this thread and make one about Rick and Morty instead, hurry.
>>
>>85420727

Don't feel bad for not understanding it. You have to know alot of pop culture going back to the 1960's and onward if you're going to get like half the jokes.

Generally only high IQ, well-read people understand this show.
>>

It's great but skip season 1

Or someone who's mommy and daddy bought cable when CN was running really old shit for nearly all of it's programming, right?
>>
>>85419816
Didnt see the appeal when I tried it. Watched about 8 episodes. Same with Harvey birdman
>>
>>85420727
the show is basically a bunch of pop culture references
>DUDE BOWIE
>DUDE IGGY POP
>DUDE HUNTER S THOMPSON
>>
I was a huge fan for the first few seasons but I kind of lost interest as they got deeper and deeper into the show's universe/mythology. Season 2 will always be my favorite
>>
>>85421205

Cable is like $30 a month. Are your parents crack heads?
>>
The Venture Brothers is the greatest television series still in production. Top 5 of all time easily, and there's no contender for best animated series ever.
>>
>>85421346
season 3 is the best season
>>
>>85421415

>>
did this shit ever end? i remember it took them like 3 years to do a season
>>

>>

because it's always in production. It should habe been one the greatest show from 10 years ago.

>>
>>85419816
Rick & Morty is naruto.
Venture Bros is cowboy bebop.
>>
>>85421810
try the Flintstones episode of Harvey Birdman. It's one of the best episodes and easy to follow because it's based on very popular stuff. Fred Flintstone is put on trial as Tony Soprano.
>>
>>85421372
It was $90, still is in a fair amount of packages that don't disconnect your original phone line. More that at least suddenly raise to it shortly. Parents thought it was a bad influence so it's moot anyway.
>>
>>85421902
Rick and Morty is Tarantino (introductory and accessible; facile).
Venture Bros is Mizoguchi (mature and timeless; profound).
>>
>>85420985
What an absolute fucking mess of a recommendation. Do not do this under any circumstances.
>>
It's okay. I feel like they were in a perfect place for Seasons 2 and 3. Before that and the tone was off. After that and it really feels up its own ass.

Escape to the House of Mummies Part II is my favorite episode.
>>
>>85419816
I enjoyed it quite a bit but it seemed to lose its way later on and I completely lost interest.
>>
>>85423191
I think it would be remembered more fondly if it had used the season 4 finale as the series finale. I also don't really like how "nice" everything looks now, specifically the backgrounds. The Aesthetic of seasons 2 and 3 I felt better served the sort of broad Johnny Quest Hanna Barbera parody they were doing.
>>
>>85421400
>and there's no contender for best animated series ever

King of the Hill is better

Also Moral Orel if we count claymation

yeah VB is kinda like R&M if it had subtlety and nuance and better writing and animation

basically the same really

>>
>>85421372

>>
All the humor comes from references. It's a bad show
>>
>>85420985

>>
It has a lot of rushed episodes and failed poltlines
>>
>>85423584
KotH took a nosedive in quality after Cotton died.
>>
>>85424776
>after Cotton died
Show went to shit when Mike Judge stopped giving a shit and stopped writing for it after Season 6. The faggots that became showrunners started making all kinds of weird retcons, stopped progressing time, erased entire characters, and made all the antics a lot more cartoony. Later seasons are not very enjoyable, but at least the series finale isn't terrible.

Explain this. I'd think the only danger is that it takes so damn long to make a season that the ADHD fags lose interest.

It's pure kino gold but we don't want normies finding out about it so please delete this thread.
>>
>>85424312
You might remember me from that time I solved global warming.
>>
>>85425253
The do an 8 episode season every 3 years. Normies can't handle that shit.

They wouldn't like it anyways. It requires an autistic knowledge of old pop culture to understand the jokes.
>>
>>85423191
When they started to treat the villains and heroes as some kind of weird unionized actors going through the motions instead of generally being antagonistic, I lost interest in the world they had developed. I still liked a lot of the characters, but the plot became completely pointless.
>>
>>85425654
It's still funny and comfy as fuck.
>>
at some point I think it got too far up its own ass with its backstory and universe and the whole "whoa what if we treated Johnny Quest arch villains as real" thing

I think it peaked in the last few episodes of S1

I'll still watch it if it ever comes back on

I just finished "Hells Angels" by thompson and kept slumping into Hunter Gathers voice.

“The difference between the student radicals and the Hell's Angels is that the students are rebelling against the past, while the Angels are fighting the future. Their only common ground is their disdain for the present, or the status quo.”
>>
>>85425484
i really don't think you need to be that well versed in pop culture to like it

VB is probably my favorite animated show and i'm a pleb millennial, i still feel like a good portion of the jokes/parodies don't go entirely over my head despite my subpar knowledge

the show still has good comedic timing, great characters with good voice actors who deliver all of their lines well and lots of interesting and varied episode concepts. also as someone else mentioned earlier it's got more subtlety and nuance than the average animated show, adult or otherwise

and i've met other people my age who actually like VB as well and are even less pop culture savvy than me

i like harvey birdman a lot too though despite not having much of a history with the original show or most of the characters they include so maybe it's just a different kind of autism

>>
I love the Venture bros. it doesn't have that modern "fuck everything" feel of Rick & Morty. Instead people keep trying to do good. plus its a lot more grounded. while obviously R&M goes nuts.

I do enjoy the deconstruction stuff of the venture bros. although the long time between seasons suck. it will be like 2020 before R&M surpasses the Venture bros
>>
>>85419816
why do you watch things thinking they have to top the new things you watched? i'm sure there are a shit on of elements they took from the venture bros and learned from to adapt to their show. its the same trope of old scientist family member with younger indispensable kids to look after
>>
>>85426087
thanks
>>
>>85419816
I love venture bros but the show peaked with the season 4 finale and they have never been able to reach that quality since. It's still good and that season 4 finale was a high bar most shows never reach in the first place.
>>
>>85426523
Is that with like a friend playing while Brock is chasing Cocktease and then returning to the party to slaughter the flywhores?

If so, yeah. That was THE best moment in the history of animated television.
>>
>>85426523
the only thing that's gotten better is the animation past season 4, and I really hope that's not the reason why the seasons are shorter now.
tried watching through it with commentary but they barely talk about the actual show kek

>>
>>85426708
The animation got outsourced to Korea around then, I know Jackson had some posts on his blog about some growing pains with that but the show just takes forever to write. It's not like a Rick and Morty where they're just concerned about ripping jokes for 30 minutes and then resetting things for the next episode. There's nothing wrong with that, it's pretty standard for sitcoms, but that's never really been what the venture bros was about.
>>

"All That and Gargantua-2" is also very good IMO

Beyond season 3, it's true, there are several episodes where not much even happens. But even at its worst it's pretty goddamn good. The latest season in NYC the show felt fresher and funny as ever, so I'm optimistic for the show overall.

>>85426988
What initially drew me to the Venture Bros. was the fact that it actually looked like a real cartoon. As good as alot of adult swim shows are, the animation is usually kinda shitty (sometimes endearingly, sometimes not). I always thought I would have liked Sealab more if they had made it look just a little better

>>85426708
It takes so long because the entire show is written by two guys who have two or three other jobs each and voice 70% of the characters
>>
>>85427380

Early Sealab episodes were literally taking footage from the original show and cutting it up with new dubbing, so the animation was usually terrible by default.

They even redubbed a whole episode with the original dialogue, played straight, just to troll the audience.
>>
>>85427526
Oh man I vaguely remember that episode. Shit was about dolphins or something and there was no punchline.

>>
>>85425484
True but the knowledge is not essential, unlike Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros uses pop culture as building blocks and is it's own thing. I've never seen Johnny Quest and I love the show.
>>
>>85426523
If the show ended right then and there, it would have been perfect. Everything just fell into place. It felt odd to actually start season 5, like the story was already over.

there's the point when you realize "holy shit this show is way more ambitious than I thought"

then later you realize "I appreciate all that they're doing. I just don't really care"

I never said "fuck this show" because I always thought it was good. but then I started falling behind, and the idea of what a big thing it is made it seem like work to get caught up.

Agreed, I lost interest after season 4. Just felt like they were treading the same ground again.

Also I cosplayed as Brock Sampson at a con back in 2013 and peopled loved it. Doubt anyone would recognise the character these days. Rick and Mortie is the new hip thing even though its mostly shock humour for normies still culturally slumming it in nerd culture.
