Everyone I know who went to watch this movie said it was crap. Even the biggest Nolan fanboys are saying it was boring and had no plot or characters. What went so wrong?

Nolan INTENTIONALLY avoided giving the characters backstory. The film is about the dread and chaos of war, he didn't want to bog things down with boring exposition.

It isn't about the plot, it is about the general struggle and experience that come from a historical event. There is no "plot" because we inevitably know the outcome of said event.
