its a masterpiece...carrey's character is the foretelling of an entire generation who would be way to into movies and tv and have little to no social skills..it did bad because people wanted carry to be doing ace venture 3 and when it was dark they didnt like..it really was ahead of its time..

iirc a lot of the backlash at the time came from people going in expecting a "jim carrey movie" coming off the back of 2 ace venturas, the mask, dumb and dumber etc. and weren't expecting somethign with as dark a tone.
