Couldn't decide if the concept was a journey to Eden or fighting the evil corporation and neither one was fleshed out at all. Dafne was OK but literally every single other child actor was infomercial-tier. Entire second act was set in who-the-fuck-cares farm. The main bad guy was literally the good guy CGI'd to look younger. I had to rewind it a few times because I kept falling asleep. Oh, and the fucking Wolverine gets killed by a branch.

Really? I considered it a complete inversion of the X-Men formula: what is usually an ensemble piece with a doomsday plot device and end of the world stakes and political allegories of good versus evil and discrimination and what not, is replaced with a grounded, elegant and personal story about a broken man without a purpose and a death long overdue.

The concept was what Logan would be doing up until his inevitable death. At first he intends to get out of the warehouse, ditch caliban and buy a boat for Charles, kill him and then kill himself. In that situation, everyone failed at what they set out to do their entire lives.

Then it becomes, let's get the kid to Eden and then go back to the first plan. It's then revealed that Eden was made up and there's nowhere for Laura to go, so then it becomes 'its real for Laura, so let's bring her there anyway'

Then Charles dies and Essex is closing in. Eden was real after all, so now the goal becomes, get Laura to safety and then kill myself. It keeps moving and evolving until ultimately our main character finds a purpose through his daughter. And Charles finds a post humous purpose in a new wave of mutants existing again . It's fairly well fleshed out to me.

They all seemed to act like children well enough

It's the middle point of the story, and the final calm before the storm. It's a temporary safe haven that gives the narrative a space to breathe in.

The effects themselves never really faultered there, and the obvious implication is that Logan's greatest adversary is himself.

Actually he gets stabbed a number of times in the chest, impaled, thrown around, bloodied and beaten. And again, the irony of the ultimatum is that Logan "killed himself" after all, with the adamantium bullet playing a role and everything.

This doesn't take place in the post-DofP timeline. The movie states that no new mutants have been born in 25 years or whatever and we see in the DofP ending that there's tonnes of young mutants around.
