There weren't ejection seats in spitfires. Bailing required high altitude because he would have to literally just climb out of the hatch and jump off the side with time for his parachute to deploy and slow him down, which takes a fairly large fall. He knew that and made the decision to keep providing air support without bailing while he had the chance.
