We as readers - and the rest of the characters in-universe - are expected to take it at face-value that he is the smartest man alive. He claims he "deliberately" only achieved mediocre grades in school, for example. Perhaps it's just a fault of Moore's writing, but his supposedly piercing insights into everything from product design to the destructive tendencies of humanity seem very trite and hollow, not actually well-reasoned at all.
