Is it the worst? Every flick seems interchangeable in the dullest franchise in history. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

I feel like people get angry about Goblet of Fire because 'muh books' but all in all it's actually a serviceable film and I really enjoyed the tone they managed to strike. It's the only one that managed to do the hormonal stuff proper justice (did a good job of keeping the 'romantic' stuff grounded with humour) which was lost in later films. Also they managed to actually get a somewhat natural performance out of Radcliffe which is like wringing blood from a stone so hats off to them for that.

It's not a bad film. I'd rather watch Azkaban and Goblet than the first two any day of the week. As for the David Yates films I felt like they lost a lot of the magic and the performances got worse - so did the magic and the script.

this is right, OP. funny because I just lent my GoF to a friend who is going to watch it for the first time today. He has been watching all of them as I give them to him and he said that he felt the difference in PoA and that PoA seemed "rushed" whereas SS and CoS drag on we all know.

I thought that was interesting point of view coming from my friend who has not read the books and it watching the movies practically for the first time
My thoughts were that the movie was rushed when I FIRST ever saw it.. probably just because the run time is a little less than the first two movies. But now however, since I have seen the movie so many times and also read the books, I know it isn't rushed and if anything it seems to lag on for me with the time turner stuff. Not in a bad way just I'd rather watch the beginning of PoA and the end of GoF or vice versa
