Rule of thumb for any comic adaptation: if you don't read the original, you're missing the overwhelming majority of everything anyway.
In here it only means that he is naturally gifted (i.e. super intelligent). He probably didn't spend time studying these after his childhood.

i think it means bullshit, really. like they read in the comic that as a kid rorschach wrote something about how harry truman nuking japan twice was a good thing (because he'd heard his father supported truman and his mother didn't, and rorschach hated his mother so he sided up with his unknown daddy on an issue he knew nothing about) and someone extrapolated that into "excelled in political science"

I see where you coming from, but it's unlikely in this case. Most of this stuff comes either directly from comic books or the authors themselves [telling it somewhere].
I'm not versed enough in Watchmen to be able to give you a direct answer, but if you take away political science (which is only taught at universities) which part is unbelievable?
Maybe it's the wording that just feels wrong, but it says that he excelled in school in the aforementioned subjects. Mostly because his very high intelligence (and probably interest).
