I mean I read that book years ago so maybe I am forgetting something but I am pretty sure the game wasn't some scifi crap with robots.

I won't lie to you guys, I read this book a couple years ago since it was given to me as a birthday gift, I was unironically enjoying despite it being blatant 80s/90s fan service. It has a fairly engaging setting and it was fun. But then the end the book came and the writer pulled out his political/sjw opinions came out and he slapped you across the face with them, in depth below :

There is 3 main characters in the book, the kid, the girl and his best friend the tournament champ and all around brotier chad. In one of the last chapters of the book they decide to have the main kid and bro chad meet up in reality to go save the world. He finds out she is really a fat black lesbian with short hair. The rest of the chapter describes how bad her family was doing before the VR world came along and they could pretend to be white and suddenly all their problems were magically solved!

It came out of nowhere and seriously put me off the end of the book. dropped it from probably an 7.5-8/10 light hearted fun ride to a 6/10 at most. be warned, it's probably going to be worse in movie format.

This is the worst circlejerk of a movie I have ever seen, worse than that Keaton feature-length McDonald's advertisement. This is pure corporate ejaculate. There is not once ounce of self-awareness here. There is nary a creative bone in this body. How the fuck can any of you think this looks good even remotely?
>>
>>85331460
Yeah, it definitely is. There's a shot where it even has trails of light coming out the light on the back like the effect in the film. Couldn't have hurt to put some sparks of electricity coming from the wheels, though.

It's true it doesn't look exactly like it does in the film, but as a vehicle that for a long time only existed as a drawing, some of its details are kinda fluid. Those three notches in the front part I don't think I've seen in any version of it, and at first that had me wondering if it was even meant to be his bike until I looked closer at it. There are unpainted big metal "bolts" (I guess that's what they are?) towards the back that convince me it's meant to be his bike. In the film I'm pretty sure they're just red, but I've often seen them unpainted on later recreations of it. And see here this toy model has the glowing green light in the wheels that I don't think is really representative of how it is in the film, but in Ready Player One it looks exactly like this. They've probably looked at a bunch of different versions.

I'm wondering if maybe it's possible the model they're using was actually produced for that live-action adaption of it they've been trying to make, and so they just took it without investigating and that's why an unexpected detail like those three notches would be there, as the team who made it as like their own "version" took a creative liberty just to give it a little more detail

Warner Bros. literally owns the rights to Akira, so they can definitely put Kaneda's bike in the movie, there's no point debating over that. It's clear they're making good use of the things they have rights to, what with Iron Giant and DC Comics characters also making appearances.

The thing with the stickers is a slightly different issue, since stuff like that doesn't necessarily carry over with the rights when bought up in another country, or there could easily be an in-story reason why whichever character who has it in the movie chose to have different stickers.

It at least has three stickers on it, the Atari logo, the Sega logo, and a Hello Kitty sticker, so they've got some stuff to stick on it even though it's practically bare, which looks fucking wrong. It could be that they're still acquiring particular rights and there'll be more stickers on it in the final movie. It's clear they've made an effort to put different stickers on it, likely owing to the theme of the movie and the characterisation of the driver (I think it's the girl from the book?). I'm sure I remember there being all sorts of wacky references literally mashed together in the book. The people in this VR world have a high degree of customisation available to them.

Danger 5 was produced with effort. Kung Fury is full of bad awkward CGI and stuff while Danger 5 was actually made using the sort of special effects and filming methods of the periods it emulates.
>>
>>85325778

Now, I hated the book. I fucking hated everything about it. But I'm willing to give the movie a pass, since they seem to be focusing more on the 'game' aspect and less on the fucking pop culture references.

Like, this might actually be interesting, while the book had absolutely no challenges. I grew to hate the protagonist very quickly. I mean, this movie might still suck, but I'm cautiously optimistic. (So far, I don't think any of the scenes shown were in the book. Parsifal didn't ride a scorpion-mech into battle, the Iron Giant didn't show up, and there certainly was not a car chase scene. The Copper Key trial was more stupid pop-culture quizzes, it wasn't Death Rally.)
>>
>>85333221
Of course not, but the whole book is just about throwing in random references that serves no purpose other than to cram in shit the author likes
>>
>>85333036
Japan like China will often eschew copyright and somehow get away with it, like in anime a drawing can get a free pass or something, or a foreign company like BMW might not even be aware of the infringement.

Also don't forget, Canon and Citizen are actually Japanese companies. Otomo even made ads for Canon. He already had a relationship with them prior to Akira.

i'm embarrassed that i've read this book and even more embarrassed that i enjoyed parts of it at the time i read them. people who enjoy it, after spending more than a moment of self-reflection on what they just read, are trapped in a popculture liberal dystopia worse than what the book presents as a horrible dystopian nightmare. as bad as the stacks would be to live in (one of only a handful of effective set pieces in the book), it's nowhere near as bad as being trapped in a society where people are looking forward to this film. i almost throw up when i think about the scene where the gary stu protagonist flies the milenium falcon.

so, i've started to change my life. i listened to jordan peterson. i cleaned my room. i've started reading better books (tolstoy, hugo). i've started exploring psychadellics and listening to terence mckenna lectures to break my consumeristic tendencies. i found and am marrying a beautiful woman with whom i will raise a family. i've started the process of going to grad school so i can be a philosopher and help shift this generation back to where it should be. i've started writing fiction of my own.

i guess i should be thankful i read ernest's shitty book after all.

Not really, I felt that was a cop-out. Like, I was thinking: Obviously one of them has to be not what they look like. There are no girls online.

But instead of it being Artemis, it was Ech, who is not-threatening at all. Like, I don't really give a shit about Ech or whatever. Him being a black lesbian is besides the point.

What I really disliked was the anti-escapism message. Why the fuck would the real world matter? Playing a computer game just made the protagonist the GOD-EMPEROR OF THE WORLD. Virtual reality is his life!

I personally would've made Artemis a straight white guy, who is really embarassed about catfishing the protagonist. So instead of meeting him, the protagonist does a 180 and walks away. When asks where he's going, he says "I'm going home. To OASIS, the only place I belong."

I mean, the Japanese got it right with Sword Art Online, because the protagonist outright states "Yes, we were trapped in permadeath Dark Souls. But virtual reality was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, and I'll never give it up."

Have some fucking honesty, is what I'm saying.

Why don't they put more focus on the puzzle solving and the politics / megacorp trying to gain utter control part of the book? Why is it just a bunch of shitty action sequences? Why isn't he almost bald at the end of the film?

But the puzzle solving made sense in-universe. The creator of their VR thing was an autistic nerd who wanted to make sure only another autistic nerd could gain control of his invention to keep megacorps from taking it over.

His business partner even shows up at the end of the book to help the main character and his friends to prevent the worst case scenario from happening.

I liked the world building in the book. I hope they put emphasis on that in the films as well.

They keep saying that 'It's the real world that matters, not OASIS'. Halliday himself tells the protagonist - "It's the real world and real people that matter." right before going "Okay, now you're immortal and invincible in-game."

We are repeatedly informing that the real world sucks. All of the protagonist's achievements are in a videogame, which lead to his success. Contrast with SAO, where even the villain tells the hero "I never liked the real world much. I wanted everyone to live in my fantasy. And for a while, I accomplished that." In fact, the villain chooses to die rather than to leave the game, and shows up later as an AI. This is portrayed as a bittersweet thing to do, and the villain is kind of an antihero.

KF was like the Family Guy version of the 80's, it was made by a guy who seemingly had no deep fondness or understanding about the 80's and who basically used every one-dimensional "RAD 80's as seen in the 10's" trope he could, using modern techniques and equipment since it's much easier.

D5 was made by people who understood and also wanted to pay tribute to the little quirks in 80's movies and went out of their way to use the same techniques used in said movies instead of just greenscreening and after effecting everything.

Exactly. If the iron giant ran in and said ayyyy remember me? Then I'd agree. I just think you're salty that someone is going to make millions off of things that you think belong to you because you have fond memories of them.
>>
>>85343137
The ads and the trailers you're watching are the same video. If you haven't noticed, movie trailers are ads.

I get your complaint, though. You'd think it would be possible for movie studios and Youtube to cooperate on this sort of thing, give movie trailer uploads a special treatment where the ad's that are forced on you have that little teaser but if you purposefully go to the page its on it doesn't. So basically having two different videos both linking back to the same page. I imagine they don't have like a separate "Youtube ad" version specifically for that purpose because it'd mean they have ywo different uploads for every trailer - or something, I don't know, I'm just speculating.

He wanted to use the money to get offworld in his own spaceship , his girlfriend wanted to use the money to fix the world. Also the VR world was Pay to Win seriously LOL. And the corporation fighting him wanted to lock the VR world down by putting pay walls on everything or something, effectively shutting him out because he was poor. And he felt they didn't truly love the VR world like he did , they just wanted to make money.

It is a rags to riches weak to powerful story , but the main character is not portrayed as power hungry , he is trying to fight the power hungry so that they can't own the world and VR world. Because it's VR the characters live there, basically the main character goes to school in VR , hangs out with his friends in VR , basically lives his life there , like people spend all day on social media. He has a real life , but it sucks, the fight inside the game spills out into his real life , as the corporation tries to kill him and his friends in the real world.
>>
>>85343470
>Well in this movie it's a purpose.
Then, there should be no problem. I was arguing fan service as general idea. This film is kind of exeption with how the plot is constructed, meaning fan service is plot tool in a way.
>If the iron giant ran in and said ayyyy remember me?
That's more or less what he did in a trailer. I know he'll probably be some plot point or something (or maybe not), but still this film will have lots of references for the sake of having them, just because of how the world works in the movie. Hollywood execs will milk in every possible way '80s nostalgia, smiply because they can.

>I just think you're salty that someone is going to make millions off of things that you think belong to you because you have fond memories of them.

>>
>>85343584
>The ads and the trailers you're watching are the same video
I have noticed, and it's the entirety of my problem. The quick blurb ads make sense and serve a purpose as ads that play as ads separately from the video, and I wouldn't even have much of a problem with them showing up before the main trailer video IF they were presented as ads separate from the trailer itself; don't get me wrong it would still be stupid but at least then they're blockable.

It's the specific practice of slipping the ad for the video inside of the actual video that reduces me to such a screeching autist. I guess my main gripe is that it just throws off the rhythm of the whole trailer--not that I'm even that passionate about this trailer or this movie in particular, but I'm just noticing it becoming more and more prevalent among youtube trailers for big budget studio films, and this is just the one that finally broke me and made me realize I just hate the entire trend.

The book is kind of a clusterfuck in some ways, but it's at least entertaining. The problem with it is that the main character is a fedora tipping cunt (at least for the first chunk of the book), there's social justice propaganda sprinkled throughout the book, and the book frequently derails itself for a series of Buzzfeed style top 10 lists.

There's some genuinely cool sci fi concepts and fun crossover mashups happening, but you have to sift through a bunch of namedropping and shit to get there.

This might sound too optimistic but I have the feeling Spielberg is smart enough to filter a lot of that shit out. Meanwhile, the mere visual of all these esoteric pop culture things all together in the same space, whether you recognise them or not, is already doing a big chunk of the work that can easily help to skip over all the ridiculously masturbatory stuff in the book. The book was first person so in order to convince you the protag knows his shit, he's autistically rambling about the history and the details of every little thing that comes up. A movie doesn't need to do nearly as much work on that front, all those things just being there in the first place, commented upon or not, is almost enough in itself..

well I will drop the movie if he stops another character and goes "Did you know this is X, I know it looks like this but in the original 1985 version it looked different, bla bla "

I don't remember him being much of a fedora, redditor yeah, but fedora? I dunno, he didn't want to argue religion with his old lady friend cause she was very devout.
