This one looks slightly better. I'm still not a fan of the aesthetic changes (the klingons look like pic related), but it looks like it has more political intrigue than it did before.
>>
I hate the overly detailed Klingon armor

I hate the generic sci fi designs

I hate how the tech on the ship looks more modern than the tech on Voyager

I hate the uniforms

I hate that they have the Enterprise badge designs in a time where every post had a different badge
>>
>>85305198
I'm so numb to big 'splosions but that didn't look too bad. I'll definitely try it. I've never seen a previous Star Trek show so I won't have a great frame of reference.
>>
>>85307874
I was pretty hyped for Voyager

I don't think I even watched the entire first season. the Delta Quadran Klingons, I mean Kazon, might be the laziest enemies in Star Trek ever. ToS Romulans don't have shit on the Kazon.
>>
>>85307874
They've complained since TNG, they've always found something to nitpick. In hindsight it sounds stupid because we know the shows are good, but now we're starting the hype cycle again so we get caught up in it.
>>
>>85307930
He is even making his Zhao voice for the character if we go by the footage shown on the trailer. But yeah, I agree that they were both robbed from having a decent career on the big screen.

It's CBS-exclusive in both Canada and US while being distributed by Netflix on the rest of the world. It means that they can afford a bigger budget by having Netflix co-producing than average network shit like Agents of SHIELD.

so much for the cheesy light-hearted feel of the older series, we mass effect now this may turn out to be good science-fiction, but for me it will never be a star trek serie
>>
>>85308386
Star Trek has moved past that point. If you want good ol' classic cheesy sci-fi with a shoestring budget then go for any SyFy channel originals or Doctor Who.
>>
>>85308355
Established networks have to stop making their own shitty streaming platforms happen. Nobody cares about them and nobody ever will.

Honestly doesn't look too bad. I'm willing to reserve my judgment until the series comes out

How would an SJW Captain handle this situation?
>>
>>85308914
Why do you think the Star Trek movies did so great in the box office while having subpar scriptwriting and directing? Because it wasn't too far up its ass and unwatchable for the normal movie goer who probably doesn't give a fuck about the show's 50 year-old lore. It is the same thing that happens to shows like Doctor Who. You either renew yourself and cater to what the audiences are demanding at the moment or you are cancelled.
>>
>>85309009
They'd keep Tuvix alive because SJWs value the collective over the individual.
>>
>>85309025
Yes, I clearly understand the business behind this new series, but that's just the problem. I'm not interested in seeing another Star Trek series if it doesn't look anything like Star Trek, and in fact I would rather they not try to resurrect the series. I may be wrong, but I doubt people who aren't already into Star Trek will be interested in following this series, while people who do like Star Trek may not be so keen on a series that looks more like Mass Effect than anything else. By trying to appeal to everyone, they may be appealing to no one.
>>
>>85307874
>have fans ever had a good first reaction to new trek?

No. No one loves to hate what they love like Trek fans. Except maybe Star Wars fans.
>>
>>85309243
Both franchises need to be left to die with dignity instead of being raped by greedy Hollywood executives.
>>
>>85309243
Star Wars fanboys are more on the love side because they treat it like a religion and can barely think for themselves. Star Trek fans are devout but have more perspective and realizes that its just a show that can be as flawed as any other show. Star Wars fans have pretty much taken over the fat annoying nerd stereotype from trekkies.
>>
>>85305198
So it's this or the tripfag thread? What happened to /trek/?
>>
I don't like anything about this
>>
The problem is, as with all Star Trek series, Season 1 will be borderline unwatchable, someone will grow a beard and then the quality will start to get better.
By season 3 it will be good. Season 4 will be great.
This one won't make it that long.

I'm predicting a holodeck episode by episode 3. Because it's on that checklist of 'things people know about Star Trek'
>>
>>85308815

I just realized something, it doesn't really matter which timeline this takes place in, if it's set before the TOS, since that time period is the same in both timelines. The timelines themselves were only fractured during and after Kelvin was attacked by the Narada.

The dope who wrote this made an interesting point: Pine and Quinto only have one more movie in their contract and given how shit Beyond was, 4's storyline could easily end with unbooting the Kelvin timeline altogether. The Abrams tards get a sendoff and the rest of us get to pretend it never happened.
>>
>>85310346
It's just stock music. Haven't you noticed that ALL trailers employ this sort of soundtrack these days. It's mainly because the score for any movie or TV show is usually completed very late into the production run.

It still sucks that they can't just stick with instrumentals these days.

>>85310922

DS9 is the breaking point of Trek. It abandons the ideals Trek had and replaces those with somewhat more realistic ones. In the end DS9 is B5 set in Star Trek universe with mostly more bland characters. It is the worst Trek and the best Trek at same time. Supporting characters are better than main characters in DS9, they are ones that carry the show.
>>
>>85311139
>>executive officers at other space stations are admirals

the admirals based at starbases commanded a sector of ships, not the station..

Janeway is by far the shittiest captain.

Voyager abuses the reset button the worst of any series, and destroys suspension of disbelief.

Neelix is basically Jar Jar Binx on a Federation starship.

DS9 is a deconstruction of Trek ideals. It's a perfect contrast to the shiny optimism of TNG. It strived to show how comfy utopian federation principles would hold together when pushed to the edge. There's a great scene in Past Tense where Sisko and Bashir talk about this in the context of the episode plot but almost as almost analogous to the whole series.

I think this one guy put it pretty well:
>Discovery's production design, however, is overall a chaotic blend of styles that don't fit together. Communicator, tricorder, phasers: TOS retro style. Starfleet bridges: Abramsverse. Discovery exterior: based on a sketch discarded for good reasons 40 years ago. Shenzhou exterior: 24th century. Shenzhou transporter: steampunk. Klingon ship: Gothic cathedral. Klingon costumes and props: ridiculously overdesigned. Klingon species: anything but Klingon.
>The production design is good in the details (even the Klingon design has its merits although I hate it) but overall arbitrary. It is like many people with different agendas are working on the show, and just don't talk to each other. Or like people who boldly try to defy the principle that you can't have everything at once. I miss the old days when Matt Jefferies or Herman Zimmerman were in charge of the Art Department, who gave their shows a signature look, a feeling that it all belongs together.

They should not have been allowed to make such demands, especially not in season 1.

But seriously, everything in DS9 comes down to the damn Prophets. Sisko being born? Prophets mind controlled his mother. Sisko is literally a rape baby. Wormhole being discovered? Prophets showing themselves. Dukat turning from interesting villain to shit? EVIL Prophets. Federation not getting stomped all over by the Dominion? Prophets. Sisko being in command of DS9 after being shown to be unstable right in the first episode? Prophets (through their followers). And why? I don't fucking know, they can't even claim boredom because they don't understand linear time. They are a lamer, more intrusive version of the Q, who only got punched by cmdr Aggro because he wasn't being mysterious enough.

Bajoran independence is secured solely by the Federation and they know it. They could have told them that they can keep DS9 and Sisko around but will also construct a massive station that would make Earth Space Dock blush. The Bajorans would, of course, have a say in the operations of said station because it is in their space. Heck, why not put some fuckhuge warp drive on the thing just so it can piss off if the Bajorans decide to go solo? And yes, they obviously worry about another occupation, but the Federation has a long track record of not doing that shit and could just take the system if they wanted to.

But in Encounter at Farpoint, an episode literally co-written by Gene, Picard talks about how he thinks Crusher being around him will cause her grief by reminding her of her dead husband. Hardly indicative of a future without grief. More indicative that no one could follow Gene's stupid fucking ideas about the future, even Gene himself
>>
>>85318206

Literally half of their 40 minute panel was reaffirming diversity shit.
>>
>>85318206

I think you just overestimate how many of "those" people are interested in Star Trek
>>
>>85318245
How is that relevant to this discussion?

>>85318248
I think you just overestimate how many of "those" people can never be pleased.

It happens every time someone tries to pander to them, so I don't think so.

lol shit, is that Grant from Mythbusters playing Sulu?
>>
>>85317692
Kirk is Vic Mangina, Scotty is Jimmy Doohan's son, Chapel was written out for that redhead, and the guy playing Spock channels Nimoy better than Quinto.

Also their Uhura is hot and does her own singing like Nichols did.
>>
>>85318385
It absolutely is.
>>
>>85318293
>How is that relevant to this discussion?

They ARE these people.
>>
>>85318309
And yet this time, based on your screencap, it looks like the vast majority of them were pleased.

You're trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. Don't you have anything better to do with your time than manufacture outrage over a tweet that isn't even popular?
>>
>>85318411
But we're only talking about whether or not they can ever be pleased. >>85318093 says that they can never be pleased, but their own screenshot indicates otherwise curly_colly is a lone contrarian.

what a fuckwit, still this is exactly what they should have done, a late 24th or early 25th century ship gets hurled a 1000 years in the future and finds the federation no longer exists and the galaxy is chaos, yes they should have just remade andromeda, really

I actually liked it, you never knew when she was going to do something horrible just to shave a few years off the trip, I wish they did more with that concept rather then hitting the reset button so much.

>>
>>85318412

You're making a lot of bad assumptions here. If you don't think this same tweet could get 10k likes on the right twitter profile, you haven't spent much time on twitter.
>>
>>85318604
After a quick check, I can tell you that curly_colly has 32 followers. The number of followers isn't important though, what's important is that I haven't seen real evidence that those people can never be pleased. The simple truth is that the narrative is more important than the facts to posters like >>85318093. They WANT this narrative of never-pleased people to be true, so they will stoop to using 1-heart tweets as justification for pushing that narrative. How shameful.

>>85318743
>You're making a lot of bad assumptions here.
You're using one single unpopular tweet to pass judgment on the entirety of "those" people. You don't think that this is a bad assumption?

>During the panel, Sonequa Martin-Green revealed that her character, First Officer Michael Burnham, is actually the adoptive daughter of Sarek and Amanda—that’s right, Spock’s parents. According to Martin-Green, Sarek and Amanda took Burnham in after her parents were killed and she was raised on Vulcan. Sarek is also the one who committed her to Captain Philippa Georgiou, which explains their connection and relationship.

>This essentially means that Michael Burnham is Spock’s adoptive sister, which raises a lot of questions: The main one is how we went an entire series, several movies, and two universes without Spock ever mentioning he had a sister. It seems unlike Spock to completely ignore someone who seemed to be a major part of his life—especially one who came into his life after such tragedy.

>At the Star Trek: Discovery panel, producer Alex Kurtzman promised there actually is a really good explanation for how Michael disappeared out of Spock’s life so completely, which will keep Trek’s canon in tact. Unfortunately, they’re keeping that explanation to themselves.

>“We’re aware [of the situation],” Kurtzman said during the panel. “You’ll see where it’s going, but we are staying consistent with canon.”

Spock never mentioned his sister. his STEP sister.

I'm pretty sure I see where this is going.

Wrong. Starfleet would have curb stomped the cardies. They couldn't even defend their own territory against one ship. One ship. They had to beg Picard for help. Imagine if Picard sided with Maxwell. Two ships could have smashed their way to Cardassia Prime. Maxwell was right about absolutely everything.

"You're a fool, Picard. History will look at you and say, 'This man is a fool'."

You are forgetting that the Federation is incompetent at fighting wars. The Federation and Cardassians already fought not long prior, and casualties were heavy on both sides.
