Malcolm was a little shit who took everything for granted.

His family wasn't well off but he had 2 Chad older brothers who could beat up all his bullies and help guide him on his journey through the middle/high school popularity contest, his dad was a nerd like him and would support him in his hobbies if he could just behave and stop wrecking things or caring too hard about what other people think, his mom worked very hard to compensate for their shortcomings, he had Dewey to play with when he wants to be a kid, his wheelchair bro was a very good friend and he was lucky to find someone who shares his interests and doesn't act like a cunt all the time. Importantly, he was smart, not just a dumb kid who doesn't know any better.

However he squandered it. He was constantly trapped in the here and now and getting his priorities wrong, trying to impress the cool kids at school or acting impulsively and fucking shit up. At any time in these episodes he could have used his vast intellect to analyze the situation, realize that although it is "unfair" and humiliating it doesn't really matter, say "fuck it" and go do something else. He became a misanthrope, constantly whining because not everything he wanted fell into his lap or played out how he predicted. No matter how much reality slapped him across the face he refused to accept the world, he became a misanthrope, forever rejecting reality instead of embracing it.
