Your logic. You use CGI to enhance or create the really difficult things, whereas you build practical effects for the rest.

See: Titanic. Big real ship, enhanced with CGI.

The book is shit. You can be a stupid fanboy whose entire personality revolves around pop culture, but it doesn't make the writing, pacing, characterization, or any other aspect of the book good. It is a bad book that relies entirely on references to other, better things to create the fuzzy feeling of nostalgia.
>>
>>85297736
I mean it'd be impossible to not CGI an entire VR world which the book is based off of.

At least the CGI looks good.

I'm actually pretty excited. The book was pretty awesome, going to be cool to see what Shillberg does with it.

Nah, the shit with the Sixers worked as its own creation, same with Art3mis actually being a well-realized character. The kernel was some pop culture bullshit but on a whole it works.

Unlike his follow-up novel, which was trash.
>>
>>85298550
It's not about the quality of the things it's referencing. Most of them are good to great. But that doesn't make building an entire narrative around references good, that's still a shit concept that deserves as much mockery and derision as it can get

>Art3mis actually being a well-realized character
Holy shit, I cannot believe there is someone this stupid. She has almost literally no depth. You can sum up her entire character, her motivations, her flaws, everything, in three fucking words.
>>
>>85298595
He's, under any definition of the word, not a nu-male.
He's just a hack writer that is glorifying his generation and his infancy, he's lucky enough that we live in a society where being a "nerd" is cool, so people bought his book and read it to get nerd cred.
He's an absolute garbage writer, apparently he won some poetry contests, how he achieved this feat I fear I'll never understand.
>>
>>85298622
It's an entire book based around, "I understood that reference!" if you didn't live through the 1980s you'll probably be annoyed by the whole thing, but the trailer looks like they threw some newer shit in there for cross-generational appeal (i.e. Iron Giant).
>>
>>85298157
I think thats duke too or is "duke"
>>
>>85297834
in 2041 or whatever I expect real time CGI to be photo realistic

>>85298333

>>
Anyone who ironically thinks the social commentary, Spielberg's fun blockbuster style and yes pop culture references (which were by the way found in fiction well before capeshit) will not evaluate this film above cgi John Carter garbage, is a fool.
>>
>>85298342
just how dumb are you? psuedointellectuals would never read this book.
>>
That was really god damn cringy.
>>
>>85298692
She starts off that way but when she actively tells him to fuck off, then later gets some backstory, that puts her ahead of the curve.

Book still fails the Bechdel test, but Parzival, Art3mis and H all get more thought put into them than mere plot devices (unlike the bad guy).

why the fuck would I read all these posts? Do you think I have the time? do you think I do nothing but browse /tv/ all day whilst feasting on hot pockets and Dr pepper, what's the worst that could happen? Do you think I want to read through the inane drivel that autists like yourself post day in and day out on this forum?

Do you think that when I opened this thread up, I exclaimed in glee at the large number of posts that had already been submitted and then had the energy and willpower to read through line after line of absolute cancer written by anonymous posters such as yourself? Do you think anyone would want to suffer under such torment, rather than to just ask a question in expectance of receiving a clear and quick answer? Of course not, no, I must subjugate myself to slowly scrolling down this thread in the mere hope that within this steaming pile of warthog shit that i might find someone has asked a question of similar vein and has received an answer. No thanks pal, I think I'll er, pass on that little escapade, thank you very much. Maybe troglodytes such as yourself have the time and energy for such an endeavor, but not this guy.

>>
>>85301123

>>
>>85300939

Yup and everyone will forget that this generation glommed their entire identity off of the 80's... There will be a couple of "aware" episodic shows or films that will call attention to the actual 80's and they will be dubbed something akin to "kino" by the apathetic denizens of whatever passes for /tv/ or its nearest living relative at that point.

The ride never ends.
>>
>>85301113
Completely straight-faced.
The book is set on a dystopian future where everything has gone to shit because people are too busy reliving epic 80s culture in a videogame but that's never acknowledged by the author, it's something obvious that apparently flew over his head while writing this hogwash.
If you're somewhat smart you read the book expecting at some point for it to turn around and start criticising nostalgia and escapism, but that never comes.
The morale of the book is that the world is shitty, so you should waste your entire life LARPing the 80s.
>>
>>85301219
Ernest Cline's from Ohio.
>>
I unironically like the book. It's definitely a "Turn Your Brain Off" kind of plot, though. In any case it'll probably be better than Sword Art Online but it's not hard to beat memetic dog shit.
>>
>>85301309
Is its future really even all that dystopian? The main character is presumably from the poorest rungs of this society, and he's still fat and has access to tech I can't even dream of.
>>
>>85301309
i find that hard to believe, how could that point be missed by the author?
>>
>>85301378
Reading TvTropes pages gives exactly the same feeling as reading this book. It baffles me that anyone would like it
>>
>>85301380
no the future is really shit, iirc one section had the main character getting on a bus which had armed guards to protect from bandits
>>
>>85297613
The motorcycle from Akira, neat.
>>
>>85301380
It's presented as dystopian in the shallowest way imaginable: faceless corporations run the world and want to milk it for profit, and the villain of the book is one of these corporations.
The videogame of the book is considered a place of freedom because the cunt that designed it gave the middle finger to all corporations, so the whole book basically boils down to a highschool boy outsmarting all the corporations (and by "outsmarting" I mean knowing more epic 80s pop references).

>>
>>85301521
I empathized very strongly with the sell-out character
>>
>>85301309
>>85301428
The book is frustrating because there's actually something cool behind the concept of a dystopia where everyone escapes reality in a VR simulation. I legitimately liked reading the parts about the kid having to climb around in his slums, jerry-rigging his setup with scrapped electronics and having to hide it to keep it from getting stolen. It describes a bus ride where everyone just immediately plugs into their headsets when they sit down and never interact with anyone else.

This concept goes fucking nowhere. The entire book does everything possible to escape "the real world" and focus 90% of the content on his video game adventures. Anything ironic about this was a complete accident or the author legitimately likes his video game world better than the real one.

Simply put, is because it allows them to associate their persona with a particular culture.
This book has been marketed as a book for nerds, so simple people reading it, will catch most of the references on it -because they're fucking basic and pop-, and since the book in their eyes is a book for nerds, they'll make the association that they must be nerds, since they got most of the things the book was talking about.
Combine this with the fact that nerd culture is now cool, and there you have it.

Old people like spielberg think video games are magic so the whole story will be nonsensical

Like at the end of the trailer they are having a race with their own imagined vehicles. But who's setting the speed of the vehicles? are they all just being nice and limiting themselves to normal speed? Why not imagine a rocket car that does the race in 1 second
>>
>>85300018
Of all those, the only good ones are
>Jaws
>Jurassic Park

So he's got 3 films, each of which were ruined by him making nostalgic sequels. I also enjoyed Hook but Spielberg went back said HE didn't like it, so that doesn't exactly count in his favor.
Spielberg is a hackfraud who "makes" pretty CGI nostalgia moments, his real good quality is that he pays (or rather, used to pay) good people to animate his films.

Yes because this is what tells us the characters are shit.

CGI is fine, but the color palette is just awful.. it looks fake as shit, in a hobbits movies kinda way.. imo

I believe you.
The trailer looks like garbage, is amazing to me what ppl can like about this.

I think we are gonna need to re-evaluate this all geek culture thing as a sort of brainwashing scheme.

This is pretty dystopian when you think about it. All that glam, glitter and hype about what's happening in the virtual world when in reality he's living on fucking stacked trailers in a junkyard.

WHO WANTS TO LIVE IN A FUTURE LIKE THAT?

>Ernest Cline's holy grail of pop culture!
>is just stupid cgi dolls of popular films smashing into each other

Disgusting.
>>

Can't wait for Islam to took over desu

Popculture really needs a Neuromancer movie.

is it just me or is cgi getting worse?
>>

My main problem with modern CGI in movies is how the director feels the need to have the camera SWISH and SWOOSH and ZIP and ZAP and have SHIT FLY IN YOUR FACE all the fucking time

back when CGI was new they had to have the camera stay still a bit back to not show any low res details and it meant you had more time to absorb the scene

Are you unironically using Common Sense Media, Goodreads, and a literally who site as a gauge for the quality of the book? Kill yourself my man, or better yet, read more books so you can come to your senses

I think that's more 3D viewings getting pushed by the jews. Without stuff flying in your face there is no use in 3D.
>>
>>85299957
This is horrible. So much shit going on for so long you don't give a single shit. It's supposed to be so epic but it's yawn inducing.
>>
>>85299556
Because Raiders, Jaws, and Private Ryan deserve all the praise they get, even though they were years ago. We're just hoping for that Spielberg to come back
>>
>>85304084
You mean Johnny Mnemonic????????????
>>
>>85299568
I wholeheartedly agree with that Simon Pegg comment about geek culture, it needs to go away and I don't like to associate cloesely with friends obeseesed with it
>You hate fun!
I can read a comic book or play a video game and enjoy it, in fact I do so every once in awhile, but the dominance nerd have over popular culture is a bit concerning considering how vapid most of the material is
>>
>>85304585
Hey now War Horse, Bridge of Spies, Lincoln and Tintin also deserve all the praise they get.
