Post-Battle of Endor (actually the forest moon of Ensor), Coruscant is in disarray and the New Republic is trying to assert itself as the new leadership now that the Empire has no Emperor. Believe it or not this is not accepted easily by the populace at large. So me consider the Rebellion to be terrorists and this succession of power as nothing more than a coup. Especially amongst the far-flung planetary systems not directly effected by the daily politicking on Coruscant. In the years leading up to the armistice signed after the Battle of Jakku, Leia and Mon Mothma and Crix Madine and Admiral Ackbar had to win the hearts and minds of local systems with "heroes" and the cult of personality. Nien Nunb and General Calrissian were at the forefront of this effort. They became celebrities. Nien has nothing waiting for him back on Sullust to compare to this lifestyle. He became part of General Leia's entourage. Her Resistance fell out of favor within the New Republic due to their conspiracy theories of the Empire's remnant rebuilding on the edges of the Outer Rim. When the attack on Starkiller Base was launched, Nien Nunb just happened to be there and needed another taste of glory.
