Because 4chan is always contrarian. It isn't a bad thing. I have a feeling this show beyond it's initial popularity surge, and if it lasts long enough, will be a split opinion for a long time. It's genuinely funny most of the time, so it's hard to take a position against it without looking like a sperg even tho that's the primary audience, spergs.

I'll be completely honest. I'm not the biggest fan, but that doesn't mean it sucks. I forced myself to watch the first season to give it a fair chance, it was hit or miss, I liked maybe three episodes.

It is just random for the sake of being random, and not in a good way like ATHF, but still coming off as a mix between liberal and anarcho-libertarian while still being preachy and acting better than those that didn't agree with it.

It has good shock value, and covered things like the multiverse theory well, but came off as too up its own ass. I expected ATHF or old Futurama and I got new Futurama (seasons 6-7) with a streak of snobbish elitism and LOL random!
>>
They're simply getting old. It's a good show.

The fans and people like you who need to ask nonstop.
>>
>>85279319

I'd say it's pretty different from futurama. The humor is much darker, the show is more self referential, it utilizes absurdism much more often and to a greater extent. And personally I don't think futurama fell flat most of the time at all. I think an overwhelming majority of the time it was slightly above average.

This clever turn-around nonsense is a waste and you can simply say "it's not for me". The equivalence is too false between these two pairs of shows.
>>

futurama was just as self referential, dark, and absurdist you retard. rick and morty isn't that different at all, other then it's cliche cartoon family that was ripped of the simpsons instead.
>>
>>85279251
Well to be totally honest I thought the show was going to be a satire of nihilism with Rick ultimately realizing the futilities of postmoernism (especially since the show makes fun of his atheism), but then I read some of Dan Harmon's tumblr and realized it probably isn't going there.
The show has some funny parts, I enjoyed watching at least half of the episodes, and I'll probably watch season 3. Some of the humor is a bit too /b/-tier randumb for me, and I guess being exposed to so much of it when I was 12-15 turned me off from it now as someone in their 20's. The catch phrases and belching is just tiresome.

But I swear to god there are people who try to reference it too much and then have to ask, "DID YOU GET THE RICK AND MORTY REFERENCE?" if you don't say anything.
>>
>>85279499
I would but I'm afraid I'd strike a nerve.
>>
>>85279433
The target audience is the people who are on facebook subscribed to "I Fucking Love Science" who have never spent a day on /b/ in their life, so the humor style is new to them. It's not just an age demographic, albeit 4channers are a rather small subset of that demographic.
>>
>>85279497
I don't find the jokes complicated but I guess they're too much for some people to grasp, that's okay. There's always Batman vs Superman.
>>
>>85279606
More of that sweet, sweet imagination? Classic.

i dont hate it, i love it. it perfectly encapsulates the appallingly empty headed shit tier philosophy followed by so many people in the modern world. namely:

>ethics are a joke lmao just do whatever feels good XD
>as long as you dont hurt anyone or anything because apparently ethics do exist, but only when they dont conflict with my current empty hedonistic lifestyle
>i am a lot smarter than you are because i spend all of my time on the internet
>my social sciene degree makes me a lot more useful to society than someone who actually performs a useful function in society, like a plumber or an electrician
>you must conform to my narrowly defined left wing view of the world and if you dont you are a close minded bigot

>>85279292
>why do I get the impression these jordan peterson parrots are the most unsorted of all?
Probably because his target audience are disgruntled men on /pol/ who are fapping to traps and blogposting about tfw no gf on /fit/. I actually haven't read any of his selfhelp stuff, I find his (or I guess I should say, Carl Jung's) take on the evolution of religion and his philosophy interesting.
>Seriously you people strike me as the types to read a bunch of self help books without actually applying any of the advice
Well that's because it's easier to bitch and moan about your situation in life than to take responsibility and do something about it.

The same can be said about the blind, willful ignorance of religion or the pointless hedonism of drugs and alcohol.
>>
>>85279980
The truth is both characters are unique so labeling them "Egoist" or "Nihilist" would be utterly stupid.

The show creators made a fucked up cartoon doc brown and marty, and went from there. Reading any more into it is grade A mouthbreathing autism. At least it actually tries unlike most other "Adult" cartoons.

Alcoholism is a medical condition marked by chemical imbalances in the brain. Rick is a hypocritical drug addict if he knows what alcohol does to his brain or just a drug addict if he doesn't.
>>
>>85280129
He's an addict who uses the excuse of "nothing matters" nihilism and his exceptionally jaded outlook to excuse his addiction.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, the creators of shows like these that attract controversy for subject matter can't pretend they didn't hear any buzz about something particularly buzzworthy. Regardless of how it started, at some point they were running everything by lawyers and making judgments that boil down to the ethics of what they're putting considerable effort into creating.

Infuriatingly, cartoons are absolutely a topic of philosophical importance in this wonderful day and age.

His motives of drinking/snorting/taking everything he can get his hands on aren't that deep.

His weird co-dependent but antagonistic relationship with Morty, his doting on his daughter while barely tolerating her husband (who he could modify a thousand different ways at whim), and his loose moral streak which actually has hard lines hidden in there, those character points are a bit more nuanced.

In the way youtube reccomends videos that are essentially the same as the things you've already watched, it is. But that doesn't make it appealing, I want something different and fresh. I can see parallels to this kind of humor as far back as some of the cartoons I grew up with like Billy and Mandy, and then later with Adult Swim and Comedy Central shows. My brain is overdosed on all this humor relying on dysfunction and all that. I see it everywhere even in all the memes and humor popular with my friends, I go on xbox live and meet someone just a few years younger than me and their entire sense of humor is being self deprecating and cynical, can we take a step back for a second please. You will see this same shit everywhere on every comedy and meme site like iFunny, edgy isn't edgy anymore.

This. It's fucking Family Guy tier humor when you really break it down but people like it because it makes them feel smart, Rick is an irritating pseudo-intellectual mary sue but people like him because "cynical science man xD" and the tone constantly conflicts with being a dumb comedy to having a few manipulative "woah so deep and sad" moments sprinkled in. I used to really like the scene where Morty was explaining he was from another universe to Summer in S1 but after watching Rick's suicide attempt in S2 for the first time it only made me realize how tacked on and out of place both of the scenes really were. Bojack Horseman suffers from the exact same problems.

I know it's an annoying buzzword now but this show really is the definition of reddit, it's virtually the Big Bang Theory but edgier.

If it's funny it's funny. You can't ignore funny. But this show isn't funny at all and the fact that not one funny clip from it can be posted is proof of that.
>>
>>85281493
You're a fucking retard dude
>>
>>85281281
You will also claim that this quipfest of a show is funny to subjectively win the argument. Your whole stance pretty much collapses in on itself when the same argument can be applied to your retarded ass.
>>
>>85281550
If that was true then I would like rick and morty which I certainly don't.

Reminder that there's literally zero difference between the reddit of today and the 4chan of about 9 or 10 years ago.
>>
Why do redditors such simpletons? You only notice the 4chan hate for this show because it's posted a lot. It's posted a lot because it's popular. There are a lot of other things 4chan hates that you won't notice because they're not as popular and because you only watch pleb shit.

Allow me to re-word my statement then: the vast majority of users of 4chan in 2006-2009 would be borderline indistinguishable from vast mojority of modern day reddit users.

But you'll still disagree so whatever.

This. I can only imagine it's funny to people who aren't well-versed in sci-fi tropes and haven't seen Futurama, because Futurama spoofed sci-fi far better.

Rick & Morty just comes off like it's trying too hard to get a laugh.

is this real life?

i watched this a year or two ago as a long term Adult Swim fan, thinking it would be like American Dad or maybe sometihng surreal/funny in a different way.

I had to turn it off in less than 10 minutes. Straight up had to turn it off cause I felt rage coming up. This was before I read anything positive or negative about it online, if anything I saw a few positive comments and no full reviews or stereotypical hatred.

So it's not that people hate it to be cool or because of its fans or reputation. The hatred comes from the show itself.

Really this is one of those "if you have to ask you'll never know" type of situations. If you like this you are just a garbage person.

I agree with this in many ways, I found early 4chan to be a bit gay
>>
>>85281905
nah, /a/ back then was a high context board and elitist where as reddit is made easy to access.
>>
>>85281905
Well I don't know what you mean, like politically? I think that old 4chan would have liked this show if that's what you mean. New 4chan supports the GOP because they think it's rebelious and edgy.
>>
>>85278455
because cartoon shit should be posted in /co/
it's the containment board for this trash
>>
>>85281905
Not true for /prog/, /lounge/or /vip/.
>>
>>85282052
/a/:
1. Wasn't the entire site even back then
2. Is still somewhat contextual (a lot less than I'd like, but still)
3. Is still pretty elitist, even if the elitism is more of a parody of what /a/ used to be.
Reddit is only easy-access by the factor of popularity. I'd argue that 4chan is easier-access than reddit by virtue of being more intuitive to fresh eyes than reddit is, even if the culture of the site is more repulsive to normalfags.

>not true for [specific parts of the website]
Yeah, like how 2006 /tv/ was distinguishable from modern day reddit because modern day reddit exists.

because like reddit, it's all about the SELF

gotta get myself those upvotes

gotta be self-aware, self-referential, self-congratulatory, aka MASTURBATORY, got to jerk myself off, gotta say all the right self-aware self-referential self-congratulatory things that we can all agree on so my friends will jerk me off too, and like the circle of life I will do the same for them

let's all just pat each other on the backs and wallow in our shared self-congratulations, witticisms and assured, shared moral ideological theological philosophical outlooks

p.s. fuck god

As a nihilist, I want to clear that Rick is not one. He's hedonist at best but so are most people (I guess that's a reason for shoes popularity?)
