Boy, 2002 sure was a different time. I went into these movies knowing that director Sam Raimi belongs to the radical political fringe, but I'll admit I was still shocked when the character Green Goblin went on a three-minute monologue about the "Hollywood kikes" and their "faggot agenda." It almost seemed like Raimi was using the movie's villain as a platform for his own hateful views. Don't even get me started on the over-use of the "N word" in Spiderman 2, either...I know Raimi and Tarantino have a running bet as to who can insert more racial slurs into a single film, but hearing that word repeatedly come out of Spider-man's mouth just really broke immersion. Between these instances and Uncle Ben's horrific first-person Vietnam flashback after-credit scenes, this is not a trilogy I would be comfortable with letting my 10 year old boy see. Still, it was funny and entertaining!

Only flaws were Tobey being too meek, the odd idea that his powers go away when his emotions are acting up, MJ being uncharacteristically selfish in Spider-Man 3, and the rest of the problems of Spider-Man 3 (terrible Venom, emo dance scenes etc) Garfield was fantastic, but the movies weren't very well done. Aside from building the web shooters, MCU Peter is a dumb fuck. Raimiverse Peter was fairly smart, but it wasn't really inate. He had to study like a normal person as indicated in Spider-Man 2 when he started failing when he didn't have time to study. I really appreciate those movies because I they stand very well on their own merit. That is to say that if Spiderman didn't exist before those movies came out I still think they would have been extremely popular and well received because they were very well written and very well done in general. I think writing, storytelling, acting, ect were all great.

That being said, I get it. I get that it's a departure from the previously established character and that bugs some people. Honestly that sort of thing would normally bug me too.

However, I feel that in this case they used their artistic license in order to change the character to fit the story they were trying to tell and it worked beautifully. That is to say that I don't think the original Spiderman Trilogy would be nearly as good if Tobey's Spiderman perfectly emulated the comic's Spiderman.

Of course that's all subjective and in the end that's just my opinion. There will always be people like me who think that it was an exceptional portrayal, despite the fact that it wasn't 100% faithful to the source material, and then there will always be people like >>85279900 who say that it was shit.

That being said, I'm 18 right out of highschool and Homecoming is legitimately the most accurate depiction of highschool today I've seen in film. How much you like it depends solely on how much you hate the MCU (for me luckily they only slightly bother me) and how old you are.

Tobey was easily the worst part of those Raimi films. He's a very stiff actor who sucks at conveying emotion, I mean just look at most of his scenes in SM1 as Peter, he just stands there with an expressionless autistic face. SM1 is really overrated desu, but SM2 is great apart from the stupid back and forth melodrama between Peter and MJ.

Garfield was good as spider man but his movies were shit, and he was bad at being Peter Parker out of costume, really didn't seem like the character at all.

Holland is easily the best Peter and Spidey, by far the closest to the source material, Ultimate universe in particular. Really captures that innocent awkward teen charm and the duality between Peter and Spidey, that scene with lifting the rubble was kino. Overall the Homecoming had a good villain and it benefited from being light hearted and focused on a small scale conflict, which is what spider man stories should be. It's just a bit bland since it's an MCU film and isn't as creative from a technical standpoint as Raimi's SM2. Still a better flick than SM1 you nostalgic contrarian cucks
