but the same is true of the outgoing Doctor. 10 worked because at least there were a couple of specials through the year and an SJA appearance to tide us over. Whereas this time, we're waiting 5/6 months after Capaldi's last series finale just to then say goodbye. So either way Christmas can feel awkward (although if they'd held of airing S10 til about now, it wouldn't have felt as long a wait).

One of the great things about 9's regeneration, for me, is that he goes out with a bang right at the end of his series. No having to wait around just for one last adventure; just 13 straight episodes and then boom! Regeneration. Like the series is able to build to that point. (It also helped that Tennant's first series was Spring, rather than Autumn 2006.)

I think TDF would've had even more impact than it already did if Capaldi had regenerated at the end of it desu.

At the beginning of the episode, the Doctor is constructing a device to reverse the paradoxes created during his previous visit in "The Angels Take Manhattan".[1][2]

The Doctor mentions that he usually gets "an invasion" every Christmas, a reference to the different invasions of Earth taking place during most Doctor Who Christmas specials.[3]

The unnamed brain-swapping aliens last appeared in the 2015 Christmas special "The Husbands of River Song", where they were servants of King Hydroflax. Their main agent, Scratch, stated that they represented "the Shoal of the Winter Harmony."[2]

A cinema near Lucy's apartment features a film called The Mind of Evil, the name of a Third Doctor serial.[4]

Nardole mentions that the Doctor cut him out of Hydroflax's body, referring to off-screen events following "The Husbands of River Song" where he was decapitated and his head was placed inside the artificially intelligent robotic body of King Hydroflax.[5]

When the Doctor complains that Grant promised him never to use his powers, Nardole brings up the Time Lord policy of never interfering with other peoples or cultures, first mentioned in the Second Doctor serial The War Games.[4]

Both the Doctor and Nardole refer to the final 24-year night the Doctor spent with River Song ("The Husbands of River Song") and her eventual death in the Library ("Forest of the Dead").[2]

The funny thing is that Russell was even more of a traditionalist than Briggs. If you go read his interviews from the 90s, he shit talks every novel that isn't completely trad.
The difference with Briggs is that Russell knew that what he liked wasn't necessarily what was best for Doctor Who, and so he commissioned original and ground-breaking stories.
Briggs, on the other hand, thinks that anything that reminds him of how he felt when he was a 12-year-old watching Doctor Who at teatime is a great release.
