in the film, it's ambiguous. i always just assumed the dude came from a rich family then gained an inheritance, and just decided to live his life in constant leisure, becoming a stoner and a slacker along the way.
the original idea from the coen's was that the dude's father invented the rubix cube, which is what he's living off of.
