What are some shows like GoT that don't involve faggy magic shit? I'm talking more about the politics of running a kingdom and balancing power from your nobles and council and what not.
>>
>>85246918
so, shows that aren't like GoT?
>>
>>85246918
What? You want medieval shows or you want GoT shows?
>>
>>85246918
Doesn't exist. Unfortunately nobody knows how to write a show like this without "epic" stuff in it without it being boring trash.
>>
>>85246949

I mean shows like GoT from the Lanisters perspective where they're dealing with problems in the kingdom (civil war, pretenders, etc) but without dragons or magic or le fire demons. If that makes more sense.

>>85246956
Medieval shows. Sorry if I wasn't clear
>>
Everyone in this thread is an underage moron.
>>
>>85247049
>Medieval shows. Sorry if I wasn't clear
No probs, anyway try
>The Borgias
>The Last Kingdom
Sorry it's all I ca think of at the top of my head
>>
>>85246918
Rome. One of the best things HBO ever made. Way better world building than GoT

Both of those sound pretty cool, thanks man

Crusader Kings 2
>>

too bad Netflix ended the series
>>
>>85247283
Sounds interesting I'll check it out.
>>
>>85247283
Marco Polo is shit
>no gay magic shit for manchildren
There is though. Also the series was cancelled with a cliff hanger ending, so fuck that
>>
>>85247343

Pretty much. I love that it's focused on family management and intrigue more than army building like the other Paradox games. Spent way too many hours on it.

>That pride after giving your bastard son a landed title and watching him form his own dynasty.
>That pride when your second oldest son asks to join a holy order and goes to fight blasphemers in the Middle-east
>That feel when your daughter is kidnapped by viking raiders then her "husband" dies and she becomes a warrior queen

Best show ever made.

The Last Kingdom, Marco Polo, Rome. I heard The Borgias and Vikings were good and Penny Dreadful was recommended to me as well
>>
>>85246918

>What are some shows like GoT that dont involve magic

Just watch the history channel, almost all the characters and their political actions are 'inspired' by real life people from medieval Europe

>Vikings
Has magic
>Penny Dreadful
Is supernatural based, so has magic
>>
>>85247679

Fuck yeah, not OP but I've been meaning to watch this for ages. Thanks for the reminder and the playlist.
>>
>>85247621
This is actually a great show about a chaotic neutral.

The faggy christians are unbearable at time especially the king but if anything he's doing his job cause his acting is good, I just despise the character
>>
Pillars of Earth
the sequel series is airing now or will be airing soon, idk I usually watch shows when they've finished airing

Versailles (if you can into subtitles). It's not great, but some scnes and characters saves it.

The White Queen

There's also the more modern takes on that concept like the Victoria series.
>>
>>85247679
Please tell me it's not based on the three kingdoms crap is it? How are the chinks not sick to death of hearing about all that, i'm not chink and i've had more than enough to bore me to death twice
>>
>>85247734
>Pillars of Earth
Heard this mentioned somewhere, what's it about?
>>
>>85247394
The two seasons are still worth watching
>>
>>85247556
No. It's all reality tv now. ALL of the shows on history (at least the history channel I get here) are reality tv sreis. All that historical stuff can still be found on pbs though.
>>
>>85247736
The 2010 version has very high budget and production values.

If we westerners are to be exposed to it, that should be the definitive version. But I suppose the chinks themselves are tired of death with all the three kingdom remakes. Same with us westerners with all the Superman/Batman/Mario remakes. Hmm oh wait that's the not the case. They're even more popular than they were 100 years ago even with yearly/bi-yearly rehashes.
>>
>>85247800
Same here (Aus).
Funny enough we get Vikings on Nat Geo
>>
>>85247833
Ok i'll give it a shot, cheers

this. Top tier.

It's a "The names aren't above their respective pictures" cover.
>>
>>85247767
Family, war, political power plays.

It's short and got some emmy nominations, I think. It's good. It begins when the son of the King of England dies and, sicne he's dying himself, he tries to make his unborn grandchild his successor but his nephew wants the crown and seek help from the church.
>>

The Tudors
The Borgias
>>
>>85247893
Actually been meaning to, thanks for the reminder
>>
>>85247767
The building of a cathedral and associated political fuckery. Set in the pre-Plantaganet 'anarchy'.

It's also got Hayley Atwell.
>>

World Without End is the sequel to Pillars.

If you want something that's actually good. They did a high budget show before it was cool. That's why it never went past two seasons, it cost too much but the 2 seasons are 100% worth a watch.
>>
>>85248083
>The Christians tell us we move inexorably toward better times, toward their god’s kingdom on earth, but my gods only promise the chaos of the world’s ending, and a man only has to look around him to see that everything is crumbling, decaying, proof that the chaos is coming. We are not climbing Jacob’s ladder to some heavenly perfection, but stumbling downhill toward Ragnarok.
>>
>>85247136

There are actually 2 tv series about the borgias that came out at about the same point, the american version is heavy on the drama, european bit more political/spiritual.

I recommend both
>>
>>85246918
the accursed kings, i don't know if a english version exist
>>
>>85249111
which one is better?
>>
>>85249111

The American version which is actually canadian-hungarian-irish according to wiki is absolutely fantastic. Great cast headed by Jeremy Irons. I'm rewatching it for the second time right now. Haven't seen the european one because I can't imagine the characters being portrayed by other actors desu
>>
Deadwood is very similar to Game of Thrones, a lot of politics and drama.

house of cards.... sort of. just stop watching it after season 3.
>>
>>85249035
Stuff like Wolf Hall and Borgia might not appeal to OP as it lacks CGI spectacle, action and quips. GoT, even without the magic shit, is for distraction porn audiences, whereas the beforementioned shows are for people with taste and style.
>>
>>85247136
I have the book of this, not read it yet though
>>
>>85246918
Watch game of thrones for the first 3 season. Just skip all the magic shit.
>>

The series condenses the first two books. Supposedly she's due a 3rd
>>
>>85249303
This.
It's a story about the French kingdom in XIV century, and the battle for the throne between several branches of the ruling dinasty.

seconding this

>great actors that actually look like the historical depictions of the characters
>mostly historically accurate
>amazing sets and costumes
>doesn't go full retard on the incest
>great fucking actors (yes they are that good)
>actual politics and subtle intrigue

one of the best shows ever made
surpised that someone on /tv/ would mention it, given the abysmal taste of this board
>>
>>85251177
>>85251548
I've heard this is good, but it's foreign right? Is it in English?
>>
>>85247684
>Vikings has magic

No it doesn't, it has faux magic as an immersion tactic. No real sorcery is ever performed it's only shown that way from certain character perspectives.
>>
>>85247123
>world building
Dude... you know Rome and most of those characters really existed right?
>>
>>85247136
I hope they make a S2. The third book it would be based on isn't out yet but if they can get Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis free for 2-3 months, I'd love to see Cromwell's downfall onscreen.
>>
>>85251615
french/german/czech/italian production
it is in english, yes
might have some bits in other languages but mostly for immersion and there's subtitles
>>
>>85251177
So weird seeing the asshole cop from The Wire as Pope Borgia though
>>
>>85246918
Historical fiction stuff is your best bet. Vikings, Tudors, Last Kingdom, either of the Borgia shows, you can even try something like Rome if you want a change of scenery.
>>
>>85251755
he does a spectacular job in both shows imo
>>
>>85250537
That's pretty much what I did
>>
>>85247767
>Pillars of Earth
It also had a 100-years-later sequel called World Without End. Which is pretty funny to watch B2B with Braveheart, since it takes place a few years later, but you get a bunch of the same english monarchy characters like Edward II and Isabella portrayed COMPLETELY differently.
>>
>>85251755
jesus, is that Rawle?
>>
>>85246918
Game of Thrones is nothing like that. It's a glorified soap created for normies to tune in to find out who will die next. It's the same formulaic trash that currently makes up the majority of successful shows (Walking Dead). Normies don't care about any of the bullshit you think you're talking about, they only care about the excitement that comes with seeing characters be killed off, raped, etc on screen, all of which are poorly written. This is the kind of shit that gets them talking. This is the kind of shit that gets them to keep watching.
