True Detective season 1 was poorly written. As a detective show the leads made little sense and the plot elements were never developed. The "King in Yellow" refence was spat out but never amounted to anything. Same with "Carcosa". The meaning of the human sacrifices was never displayed. While I liked the show, it was only held together by Rust, and there was far to much family drama in his partner's story.
How would you have knitted the mystery together better?
Personally, I would have done a similar show but set in 1920s Louisiana. stylistically, I would have liked to have brought in more Cajun, voodoo, and vaudeville themes. It's also important to develop a better reason for the cults existence, that there is a real paranormal or satanic motive for the cults to opweate. I think referencing the book "the king in yellow" was a good idea, but needed more substance. I would also be fine knocking off H.P. Loveraft so long as it were compopentenlly done.
