I remember reading somewhere that Kubrick berated the actor who played Animal Mother constantly in this scene after each take. The actor got real pissed and asked something along the lines of "What the fuck am I supposed to do?" and Kubrick from behind the lens said "How about some better acting"
I can only assume the actor delivered the lines normally the first few times only to be forced to change it up constantly for Kubrick. I think he got the desired effect, as the scene comes off very surreal and very memorable.

Kubrick is known for dozens of takes per scene.

Though D'onofrio has stated that he typically got his shots done in less than 10 takes, which comparatively was much fewer than most of the other actors in his section of the film. (KPCS)

Yeah I think Kubrick had very specific things in mind on what he wanted to convey with each scene. Most directors do multiple takes to ensure a good shot and to have a selection of shots to choose from. But it seems like Kubrick does takes until he gets exactly what he wants.

D'onofrio probably knew what Kubrick's vision was and what he was going for each time. He nailed it.

It's during a portion of the movie thats about war and the media. Vietnam was the first heavily televised war. Hence, in the next scene, we see television interviews and cameras filming a battle. However, this is still just a representation of war, not the real thing, and is distorted to fit the narrative.

Joker answers that he's seen combat on TV, to infuriate Animal Mother. The other crew members laugh at their responses, the scene is reminiscent of a television sitcom with a laugh-track, complete with witty one-liners. One of the most genius scenes in the movie.

FMJ is a 10/10 kurbick film

The tension between the two almost felt like homolust in this scene. It looked like they were about to start sucking each other's cocks right then and there.

1) Joker didn't really care about the camera, because they probably had a surplus of cameras in the marines. maybe the vietnamese guy could feed his family for a month after selling it.
