Well the show is about Shinji. It's centered around his character entirely. It's the psychological aspect of the show that I think makes it great. It wouldn't stand out from the other anime of its time if it was just a show about robots fighting supernatural monsters.

I tried to watch it when I was 16, and although I didn't hate it I found it boring and didn't finish it. I can watch and enjoy slow things, so that wasn't the problem. Eva just didn't do it for me. The fact that I had a ton of friends who were into it probably ruined it for me because I basically knew the whole plot going in. Also my friend was really into it and she shipped the characters and dressed like Asuka at school and kept comparing me to Rei which was really off-putting.

Alright I've been wanting to talk about this fucking show for a while now so if you agree/disagree please reply and tell me your thoughts.

I watched the show and EoE, and EoE carried the whole fucking thing. Without the movie the show would be decent at best, because we finally got to see some answers and character building in it that was lacking throughout all those episodes I slogged through.

How can anyone say that the show is 2deep4you? I perfectly understood what it was going for those last 2 eps because I thought about that shit too when I was 14-16. Trying to express it in such a hamfisted way is just so cringe, real art uses subtlety and metaphors not the "THIS IS THE ME IN YOUR BRAIN BUT IT'S NOT THE ME IN MY OWN BRAIN LUL SO DEEP HUH".

I fucking loved the movie because it made watching the show worth it, it gave a real conclusion and explained why the characters were so awful. The show is NOTHING without the movie.

The justification is that throughout the series Gendo shows how little he actually cares about Rei and how she's basically a tool he's using to ultimately see Yui again. Meanwhile Shinji is basically the only person that actaully acknowledges her as a real person and tries to treat her with some warmth. That's why she sides with him in EoE. Rei's character - from our perspective - is seemingly completely unphased and unaffected by the actions of those around her until the end, when this perception is turned on its head.

Brilliant idea, awesome design, absolutely shambolic execution.

The most interesting thing about it is the big picture. What's happening, how it's happening, why it's happening. The concept is truly epic and terrifying.

What's not so great is hearing a teenage boy screech for 30 minutes and have conversations with himself while waifu god does whatever. I know what happened, but compared to the rest of it, the ending is a rushed, confusing mess.

Typical weeb shit really. Could be a great thing in the hands of a tight writer/editor combo. Short run, brief but satisfying action, enough subtle exposition to foreshadow the bleak, apocalyptic ending. No sequels or spinoffs. Or fucking penguins.
