Obsidian/Dragonglass is fatal to Walkers, as is Valyrian steel. But there's almost no Valyrian steel left in the world because the country, well, exploded. Now all that's left are some family heirloom weapons like Longclaw.

Yes, the thing to do is to find as much obsidian as possible and make daggers from it, but you have to remember that only kills White Walkers, it doesn't kill the wights. You have to get through an army of tens of thousands of zombies, and every person you lose doing that will become one of the Walker's zombies too.

There's not that many Walkers as far as we know, but getting to them and successfully stabbing them with dragonglass might be easier said than done. Sam got lucky, 100%, and Jon killed one with his sword because it was taken completely off guard by him blocking it and he landed a quick hit.

You might get through the thousands of wights to a Walker, then it just dodges your attack and stabs you in the face. It's why it's such a dire situation.

The biggest problem has always been getting the people of Westeros to stop fighting each other and realize the real threat is coming from beyond the Wall. 99% of Westeros thought of Walkers as just an old myth and the Wall as just somewhere to send criminals.
