I think the 2 main reasoning for greenlighting this would've been to try to revive a dying franchise by sheer shock value and mere ideological/political beliefs of the executives/producers. I don't think there is too much than that.

I don't think it'll broad the fanbase, maybe get old fans interested again and get a few morbid viewers watch the show for a few episodes; but if it doesn't have some estellar writting it'lll crash and fail hard.
