The written statements on where several objects were in his apartment didn't match the photos. IQ scores are kind of inflated with serial killers, I read somewhere. Like, people WANT them to have high IQ's and the tests are faulty because of it. Even then the majority of serial killers don't have above-average IQ.

The biggest problem that police face with serial killers is that there's no motive or relation. Most murders are either carried out by someone the person knows or someone who has a clear motive to kill the person. So all they need to do is check the relatives and 9/10 they'll find a really good suspect that they can then nail. Serial killers don't have that, the closest you get is them having a "type", which isn't certain, or stalking a certain city. That makes it practically impossible to find the guy unless you get lucky with some piece of evidence. If anything, we're only catching the serial killers who have fooled so many people that their hubris rises to levels where they think they just can't be caught, so they throw caution to the wind and do get caught. The more "well-adjusted" ones that don't have the idea that they're better than everyone else keep being cautious with every kill and so we never catch them.
