How faithful is it to the books?

I've only seen the movies and I've never read the books. I figured the TV Show could go more in depth in to the books.

I really like it but the one thing that fucks me off is the obnxious background instruments. There was one episode in S2 where there was drum being constantly hit in the most annoying fashion possible
