So we all know this happens - Hollywood adds a little gay to a movie to lure certain demographics, but not enough to give anyone a sense of a good story honestly told with honorable efforts at representation. The latest would be this opus. We spend much of the movie watching Patrick come on to Lee sexually, and Lee clearly isn't unaware of this invitation and yet by the conclusion, nothing happens, just the usual cracker family values bullshit. A transgressive desire is depicted in the scenes between them, then denied. Is the writer scared to follow the implications of his own porny scenario, or was a bait-and-switch always the plan? Patrick is the most obvious gay boy turned straight by authorial fiat since Tea and Sympathy.
