There are none. Movies are only made after the most hopeful and optimistic books, unless it's some weird pet project cult film, which are a major minority.
Stick to books for quality writing, like bad endings. Movies aren't old enough yet, give them a couple hundred years for their balls to drop

This isn't really sad. I mean yeah kinda because he get's shot but the ending is left open/ambiguous on purpose. As far as I remember he doesn't die. He's just being taken to the hospital by the paramedics. Similarly "In Bruges" has a similar ending and so does the Guard although without the stretcher. Lower budget films tend to have ambiguous endings.

While both the book and the movie end with her dying, the book isn't as violent and traumatic as the movie. Instead of being brutally burned alive by her attempted rapist, she kills herself after getting in a car accident, knowing that the resulting explosion (her car was outfitted with alien tech that includes a self destruct function) would vaporize her body and, in a way, make her one with the planet, which she had fallen in love with.

The movie preserves this theme with the final shot of the ashes from her body drifting up into the sky, but the book is so much more poignant.

You're not supposed to root for the Trojans as much as you're supposed to fucking hate Paris for bringing about the death of all the great heroes on both sides.

Even Paris' choice of weapon is meant to make you think he's a cunt, because a bow was thought to be the weapon of a coward who didn't dare to enter into single combat.

But then you get retarded teens who dream about Paris just as they dream about Romeo and they grow up into being retarded adults who still dream about them without ever looking deeper into things.

While it wasn't a "happy" ending, MBTS wasn't a sad ending either. Lee does learn to make room in his life for Patrick (he moves to a place with a guest bedroom).

It's a tiny, tiny victory for him but I think the movie presents it as him making progress, albeit very slowly (which is understandable).

>>
>>85151335
It's the best.
>>
>>85154644
I sort of interpreter it more as Lee has Patrick, or more specifically he recognizes that Patrick needs Lee and therefore Lee feels responsible, as opposed to the flashbacks and early parts of the film.
I.E. once Patrick grows up and moves on, Lee is fucked. So for me it was a dark ending because Patrick doesn't recognize that Lee needs him as well, how could he? He's just a kid.

Then again I'm a pessimist. Their hypothetical lives could play out the complete opposite. It just felt like Lee was on a the edge, and one almost inevitable slip up by the young and unwary Patrick would pretty much be it.

>>
>>85154644

I guess. I think it leaves room for interpretation. You have the scene with the old guy who talks to Lee about both their fathers, which lays out the many possibilities for Lee in the future. He could end up like that guy's dad and just disappear some day without a trace. Or he could end up like that guy himself and learn to live with it somehow. Then there's the image of the one remaining space on the Chandler gravestone that already has the names of both of Lee's parents as well as Joe. The scene of Lee and Patrick going up the hill is pretty self-evidently bittersweet. And the final image of them on the boat shows them without Joe and the safety bar of the boat, but at least they're both sitting there together.

Yeah that final fucking shot was crazy. I really loved how this movie inserted silent scenes that, while they didn't alter the play by virtue of having no dialogue, still managed to recontextualize many things and offer a new take on parts of the story.

But that's a sad ending, because Patrick is just a normie. Adopting him into his life is completely arbitrary. Also, if a movie is going to show a guy as poor as Lee, I'd like some realism about how much money he earns, why he's been living where he has, what it will mean for him to rent a larger place. Patrick's going to cost him money. Kenneth Lonergan seems to think that people are only symbolically janitors, like janitors are people who lack personal ambition and they need something to get them out of the rut. It's Horatio Alger thinking on some level; Lee's problems are going to be allieviated by being multiplied, somehow. No, bootstrapping doesn't work. His stress and misery will be multiplied. Does Lonergan think working-class people feel okay about their lives because their kids smile at them and shit? And this isn't even his kid. It's a diaster waiting to happen whose author doesn't know it because he's never done a day's real work in his life.

>>85157383

I know, anon. The really sad thing is that if you watch closely and look at the window behind him right before he says that line, a car passes by with flashing red lights. There's no way that wasn't just happenstance, but even if it's by chance, it's such a perfect little evocation of the fire that destroyed his life.

I love this film.

there aren't any, because movies and series are designed to promote the "white man saves the world" agenda.

it's the same formula, humble person is oddly antisocial, and a beautiful women who somehow doesn't know she's beautiful, somehow is only interested in him. a conflict happens and he's forced to be strong. he gets the courage to pursue that woman while also defeating some bad guy. defeats bad guy, gets girl. end. occasionally they will have the woman and man die together hugging or kissing, but never real.

here's a few I like that are different.

the perfect storm, drag me to hell, cabin in the woods, empire strikes back, mostly horror films.

Was the alien inside the ship also a victim of the Thing?

How does an assimilating and dna and/or gene copying monstrosity even pilot a ship like that? Or was it sperging out when it was flying that ship in the first place?

I mean it was sperging out at nearly everything, it's fight or flight instincts are extremely volatile, forcing it to infect and assimilate all organics in its vicinity, and all it takes is a single cell of it swallowed by some shrimp in the sea to spread its influence further to the rest of the world, turning an entire planet into a blob of assimilated flesh.

>Was the alien inside the ship also a victim of the Thing?

I don't believe its confirmed one way or another, but I think a characters in one of the movies has a line about how whatever the Thing is probably caused the ship to crash in the first place. Later on when they discover it building a ship, it still doesn't confirm anything because the Thing would probably have access to those memories if it infected some space faring alien.

Personally I think its obvious because why would some parasitic type organism that can grow and replicate so quickly need some huge flying saucer with a bunch of computers stations and shit

So I recently watched The Thing and and major spoilers here. So I presume both the survivors weren't infected since none of them didn't just nom the other since neither of them had no way to defend themselves at that point and they just ended up freezing to death. But at least for what we know all traces of the Thing were destroyed and hence would never reach the mainland and destroy humanity so despite everyone dieing it's a good ending is it not?

Homer realised that to depict the entirety of the Trojan War would be tiresome and rank folly, therefore his poem is the narration of a simple event and plot (the siege of Troy) with the bulk of the story being made up of episodes naturally arising from the plot.
The directors made the mistake that Homer thus avoided and translated many of the scenes directly but without the clarity that a narrative poem can provide, which is why it's not immediately clear what the beef is with Achilles/Agamemnon/etc. is in the beginning, for example.

This one, along with All Quiet. All the gunshots in all the action movies in all the world had less combined weight than that one at the end.

Child's was the thing. Not because of the stupid gasoline-in-bottle or breath theories that are bullshit, but because Childs was shown to be a cautious man previously, not wanting to risk going after it even as a group, and then we're supposed to believe he went off into the snowstorm after a moving shape on his own. He's also wearing different clothing and the last time we see him the shot pans down to a door behind him. MacReady laughs at the futility of the situation.

The movie wasn't really "about" Indian oppression. Sure it was brought up with Glass' son but the Indian tribe in the movie weren't exactly good guys either. The chief traded a girl for horses with the french plus they tried to kill Glass multiple times

I had completely blocked this out of my memory. Thanks for the reminder.

Any movies with "surprise" sad/bad endings? I mean with the ending being all nice and cheerful and the last part is when everything just fall apart.
>>
>>85176067
He has a point though. There was absolutely no Indian child part of the story in the book, or the story it's based on.

Hollywood just shoehorned it into the film. It's kind of annoying.

Snowpiercer had maybe the most bizarrely nihilistic ending I've seen in a while. You've got a basic (nonsensical) plebs vs. authoritarians setup, the plebs rise up in justified revolt, throw off the yolk of oppression, drive back their oppressors, the hero goes toe to toe with several minibosses before facing the big boss and heroically self sacrifices (moments after said hero admits to systematic baby cannibalism btw), and then in the grand finale, literally everybody dies.

Not "everybody" as in "every character in the movie", mind, "everybody" as in "The human race is now extinct. Thanks for coming out."

In the last 3 minutes, the whole mobile train habitat the entire movie has taken place in, up to this point, which contains every surviving human in the world, crashes in a giant fiery wreck. As far as we can tell, 99% of everybody dies, with a few "lucky" survivors crawling out of the burning wreckage into a subzero arctic wasteland. They are then immediately devoured by polar bears, or possibly some make a run for it and die of exposure. It's not specified.

Oh that's interesting, I guess you have to be a bit more observant for the clothes and the panning part but his personality didn't really match his antics, perhaps the stress of the situation could of made him irrational though.

Some of the best westerns of the past decade and none of them involve Indians. They shit all over Leo's flick too.
>>
>>85176298

Considering that the rebels who escaped from the train froze to death in mere minutes it's almost a guarantee the survivors all froze to death before the day was out.

I'm not sure either of those qualify as westerns, but whatev. Because it's a good lead in. Because my favorite western doesn't involve indians AND is a mainstream movie with a sad ending. Huzzah.

>perhaps the stress of the situation could of made him irrational though

Yeah, ultimately the ending is supposed to be vague and open for interpretation, there's no 100% way to know that Childs is the thing or not. I think I end up seeing it as Childs being the thing exactly because I think the movie is better off with a sad ending, rather than the "happy" one where humanity is definitely saved at the end. Instead the threat is ongoing even as the movie ends, as it would be with such a dangerous being.

The reason he was unhappy was because he saw his country becoming a country of minorities, a multicultural hellhole with criminal gangs, high crime rates, low trust society etc. as the outcome. You can see it throughout the movie, you can tell he's thinking 'what the hell is this? this isn't america any more, is this what I fought for?'.

He wanted to solve the problems but he was shortsighted. Sure he put one gang in jail but that isn't going to make things better in america again. That neighbourhood is gone, it's not american any more. This is ultimately the failing of the movie - it completely buys into the liberal narrative/agenda of 'whitey must die out and leave this country to non-whites'. It's a sad, sad ending because he's basically the last american in the area, and he gives his life to protect someone who shouldn't even be in the country because he has such a strong sense of right and wrong, yet in giving up his life he is also giving up the nation which fostered that virtuous morality that forms such a large part of who he is.
>>
>>85176751
Well not necessarily, because the polar bears were like 100 yards away. So maybe they get eaten before they freeze. Or they freeze first, then get eaten. My point is... what's the fuckin point? What are you trying to get across here, director man?

>>85176761
>the yolk of oppression
>You're a diamond dozen you are.
That's literally the plot of the movie. The plebs are portrayed as good guys in a bad situation, doing the right thing, and the bad guys are unambiguously bad.

There's also the disconnect between his ideals and his failed family life, something that his neighbors at least somewhat can live up to.

He really should've given into the rice at that point and make some Elliot Rodgers with that chick from the party that clearly had the hots for his rusty flag pole tbqhwy
