This movie made no sense, it absolutely does not connect to the original trilogy in many ways. But pic related always bothered me. If the LotR original series is very much reminiscent of Medieval Europe (or earlier), why does the Hobbit (taking place BEFORE) have 17th century painting? it's like they didn't even give it a second glance.

Jackson didn't ask for the third movie. The studio forced him into it. The original plan for was for two. Most of the problems with the Hobbit movies were the result of the studio forcing Jackson into a project he didn't really want to do and giving him almost no time to prepare for the job.

He still could have done a better job (Mirkwood was handled like complete dogshit), but it's not entirely his fault.

That's a straight up lie that Hackson fags came up with. He got to the end of principal photography and hadn't figured out what to do with the battle of the five armies yet. He pretty much just had Andy Serkis filming random shit on a screen screen with the second unit. At that point instead of asking to delay the second movie, he called the studio and lied about having enough material for three movies that way he could get more time to plan the battle out. At that point he finished editing An Unexpected Journey, and then they started filming again, and that's where all of the out of place filler from the last two movies came from.

That's because Tolkien wrote the Shire as being an idealistic English countryside. So you essentially have a little piece of 19th century England inexplicably tucked away in the corner of an antediluvian world of myth.

They were trying to figure out how to get more money out of filming a series.

They attempted to do it by splitting up the book, but it didn't work, people saw through the cash grab and hated the movies.

Marvel then tried a new business model of just filming every scrap of paper ever written in a series, and it worked amazingly, hence why Harry Potter, GoT and others are trying something similar.
