The first time I saw the trailer, I thought he did bad job, then I remembered how Tommy acts in interviews. Franco was nailing the low-energy, barely-coherent version of Tommy that he seems to be most of the time in public. Everything I've heard so far says that Franco did an amazing impersonation of Tommy, so I have hope the actual movie will be better than the clip looks at first glance.

Considering that the line was dubbed, and the movie is probably going to include the poor sound recording as a joke, his performance is understandable. It's a defeated Tommy who barely managed to get the line right after hours of attempts, and before the scene was dubbed with a better audio recording. It doesn't sound like the actual scene, but it shouldn't.

They did shoot outside. The rood set was built in the studio's parking lot. A big reason why those scenes look like shit is because they couldn't get the lighting right because the sun would change over the course of the many, many takes that were required.

Agreed with everyone else. I've actually read the book 3 or 4 times because it is so bizarre, hilarious, and like others have said, poignant at times.

I think it is likely that Tommy was brain damaged in a car crash which was at least partially responsible for the way he is. Also explains his James Dean obsession.
