a very good example of ALPHA

tony is logical. sure, he's depressed and gets angry and anxious and whatever, but none of that matters. it's ok to have your moments of anger. tony always did what he wanted and what's best for business. the way he treats women, the way he gets in people's faces for disrespecting him, the way he kills without remorse, the way he argues and quips, it's phenomenal. gandolfini did a fucking 10/10 job, and that's just the main character we're talking about here, there's so much more the show offers.

every character is something worth studying, because it's human behavior after all. those who are street smart survive, those who aren't don't

>>
>>85127261
Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut
>>
>>85127261
I learnt to always lend money from people who are not long for this world.
>>
I learned that in business and in life in general the only people you should be afraid of are your own family. Nobody else deserves the same amount of worry or thought. Nobody else is worth it.

Tony throughout the series showed no fear. He didn't demand respect, he fully expected it. That's the only way the mob lasted so long, and how it eventually fell. Too much infighting between crews, too many egos to deal with. All the people like Tony who could strike the fear of God into the lower level goons got locked up or betrayed throughout the years. Without strongman figures like that around to keep all the DUCKS in a row, the mob withered and died.

Whether it was Ralphie, or Richie Aprile, or Phil Leotardo or just some insobordinate crews, Tony wasn't afraid of any of them. He even wasn't afraid of getting whacked. Balls of steel. He knew his fate was sealed. But he was afraid of one thing.... Not being able to provide for his family and what would happen to them in his absence. His son or daughter fucking their life up. Or Carmela leaving him and ratting him out. Or even his mother being a cunt 24/7. This is the shit that kept Tony up at night, and for good reason. It's part of what made me respect his character so much and finally understand his appeal.

He was ruthlessly effective in his business, but always walked a fine line with his family. I've started to act the same way in the jobs ive had. Dont take shit from anybody. Always stand your ground and put your self respect first. Your family is the only thing you should make compromises for in life. I fully respect that.
>>
>>85127261
In all seriousness though I learned that tony is a piece of shit and a shit indecisive leader (reminder jackie jr did not die because he wanted the thug life, he died because tony never had the balls to talk to have a proper sitdown with jackie and be a father figure)
>>
>>85133011
Its the mob. Their rules are different. The same with Vito being gay. You can't have any illusion of weakness for rivals or insobordinates to use against you. Whether it's eating pussy or taking it up the ass, if someone uses it for disrespect it's a big problem. It's how the structure of organized crime has to work; off of respect.

I know it seems weird to you but they killed each other over trivial shit like this all the time in real life. Especially people they suspected were gay. It's no joke
>>
>>85133663
I always thought he kept Jackie Jr at a distance because there was always the chance he would turn against Tony for what happened to his uncle. The Apriles are fucking crazy. The kid could've gone rouge at any minute.

Notice how even after Artie Bucco found out Tony torched his restaurant Tony still kept him close because he wasn't afraid of Artie. He could do nothing to Tony. Even when Artie was pointing a rifle at Tony, he still didn't believe he would pull the trigger.

It's different with people like the Apriles.

Don't forget what it was all like from Carmellas perspective. When their marriage got bad she could never have affairs like Tony could. All the men who knew who she was were too scared to go through with it. She was even more trapped in the situation than Tony

>She was even more trapped in the situation than Tony
That bitch knew what she was getting herself into. Just like Kaaaaren in Goodfellas
>>
>>85138161
Oh yeah I totally agree, didn't mean to put more blame on her than she deserved. Her situation was unbelievably shitty with Tony because of that specific double standard. But she was also shallow enough to be appeased with gaudy jewelry and promises of spec houses, which seems to be a big part of why she was drawn to Tony in the first place. The potential for prominence, status, and wealth.

I feel like the Season 6 ending has gained poignancy from the parallel sudden death of James Gandolfini IRL
>>
>>85141051
Exactly. That's how most of these mafioso guys went out. Either a cap in the back of the head or dropping dead from a heart attack from their shitty diets. Even when they get busted by the feds it must feel like sudden death to them.

It doesn't matter which method it is or when it comes. It all ends the same way regardless. I still maintain that it makes just as much sense that Tony didn't die at the restaurant in the final episode but it ultimately doesn't matter. He was gonna go out that way anyways.

Plus throughout the show it seems pretty rare (except for Leotardo) that made guys were clipped in front of their families. It would make sense for Tony to be done in front of his family the way Leotardo was done in but again, it's not like it matters at this point
>>

they leave the gun because it undermines the police right away, the serial number is scrapped and there's no finger prints, those guns are like burner cellphones, you don't go on a hit with your everyday piece, imagine getting busted during a routine check-up and the ballistics match your pistol with 2-3 murders.
>>
>>85143555
They also fully establish in the series that the witnesses never testify when they figure out it's mob related

The end taught me to watch how I live my life, so that I don't end up like Tony. To me it told a story far gruesome than that he died in the last scene. Tony didn't die, but instead we were left with the unending anticipation of one's doom, right around the corner. The feeling of loss of control, it all started with the ducks, remember?

I love the show on so many levels, and this is one of them. The Sopranos is literally the only even quasi-realistic American show I know that acknowledges any other stance than that of euphoric fedoras.

That mirror thing and the footsteps is left up to the viewer, but Paulie's experience is in no way diminished or pussy-footed around.

The Sopranos definitely had a mystical air about it. I think it mainly comes from Catholic Italians and their predispositions to this kinda higher power stuff. We see the world from their point of view, so this stuff is merely their explanations about things I guess.

The psychic scene and the wine glass moving by itself are most definitely supposed to be noticed by the viewer
>>
>>85133983
>He could do nothing to Tony. Even when Artie was pointing a rifle at Tony, he still didn't believe he would pull the trigger.
Not so much that he could do but would not do. Tony knew Artie was a weakling. I feel like that scene was one of the more pathological of the series, where he lies to his friends face without flinching about something extremely important.

>inb4 they lie all the time
Sure they do, but usually everyone's got a stake in the game, so it's fair. This time, it wasn't.
>>
>>85144889
This is actually a perfectly valid criticism of Spartacus. I never actually liked that film to be honest
>>
>>85144899
Of course I'm speculating here, but I feel like it's also in a way meant as a commentary of the characters as well. A lot of airtime is spent on rationally justifying their behavior as soldiers in a war etc, but all that stuff is added on to remind the viewer that no rationalization frees you from the burden of your past actions.
>I think it mainly comes from Catholic Italians and their predispositions to this kinda higher power stuff. We see the world from their point of view, so this stuff is merely their explanations about things I guess.
Exactly.

See, the real Sopranos fans knew exactly what the ending was trying to accomplish. The show during it's peak was being viewed by millions but I think that's mostly because saying "fuck", showing titties, and people getting shot in the head on tv was a fairly new novelty.

Whenever I talk to people about the Sopranos a lot of them say their parents/uncles/cousins watched the show every week but never bothered to give the series another watch after the finale. The ending is why plebs have already forgotten about the show and moved on. Sadly I saw the same exact thing happen to Mad Men. Fantastic fucking show. Amazing character study with Don Draper. Its probably the #2 Or #3 best show of all time but the ending just didn't sit well with people and it's reputation suffered.

Fucking plebs
>>

>>
>>85145322
I know what you mean, but then again, that's what made the show so popular: it had something for everything. You can watch it as a romanticization of organized crime, the story of fall of tradition and order, or one man's journey further into the depths of all-consuming fire, just to name a few.

I too have frustrated myself (and others) to no end trying to explain this to other people. You either get it or don't, that's pretty much it.

>Sadly I saw the same exact thing happen to Mad Men. Fantastic fucking show. Amazing character study with Don Draper. Its probably the #2 Or #3 best show of all time but the ending just didn't sit well with people and it's reputation suffered.

The ending of mad men is supposed to be say "this show is an american tv show, so it must have a happy american pro capitalist ending--because that's what america is all about, pursuit of happiness".

I believe the end of Sopranos is supposed to relate that "Crime doesn't pay"--that had Tony had an honest job, the family wouldn't be so dysfunctional and stressed.

There is no fairness in the show. It's not meant to be self-inserted. Tony is not a sympathetic character. Well, he is, but that's not the object of the show. It's really more a display than anything else. That's what I loved about it and puts it ahead of, say, Breaking Bad for me. It doesn't tell your audience how to feel about the characters or really try to justify actions, it simply shows what happened. That's all.

Just observing some old crusty Italian has-been mafiosos clinging on to relevance in a modern society. Very good character study of Tony Soprano who is king narcissus among a bunch of very hard to love characters. That's what gives the show it's charm. The characters are unapolegeticly horrible and unpredictable but the show is very subversive with symbolism and mysticism so it's not just about Italian guys talking and smoking. Everyone has a symbolic and moral arc but at the same time it's very realistic and stripped down.

Just watch it and don't stop until it's done. It works better to get immersed

Absolutely this. I saw the Sopranos when I was 16 the year of the final season that I watched live in its entirety and it changed the way I see television. I always thought TV was a waste of time growing up, I only watched TV when one of my sports teams was playing, but my parents let me watch their Sopranos box sets to catch up with the final season and it completely changed my mind about what television could and should be.

Reminder that everyone sitting on the bench eventually dies and everyone standing survives and Chase is a genius for havbing 4 whole seasons worth of foresight

>great character development
What would you say changed about Tony over the course of the series?
I've watched the show 4 times, and in Tonys case I do not think he changed at all. At the end, he's the same miserable asshole he started out as.
>>
>>85157751
He tried to better himself, thought things through a little bit more, then did yes I agree, give it all up. He's different in earlier seasons, will placate and play the game, later on he's too used to not having to do that mealy mouthing shit. That's it, that's all I got from his becoming an asshole in the last two seasons
>>
So will The Soprano teach me something about life? Lately I have feel pretty shit about life, I feel like I can't do what i want to do because of health issues, and when i can do it it never really gives me what i'm seeking

That all the other mobsters depicted in the series, especially the other bosses, absoluetely pale in comparison to Carmine Sr.
Sure, Tony was charismatic and intimidating, Johnny Sack was smart and ruthless, Phil was obnoxiously defiant, unreasonable and dangerous. But only Carmine Sr. had that air of absolute authority. He was an old-time don, and the only person Tony completely respected.

Also, he invented point-shaving.

It will undoubtedly teach you things about life. What exactly these things are heavily depends on yourself though.

The Todd VanderWerff reviews for the AV Club are incredible to read on a rewatch. Too bad real critics are all gone from AV Club and Todd writes clickbait shit for Vox now

In retrospect it might make you feel that you shouldn't continue doing things you know are wrong before you get to a point where you can't stop doing them. But the show isn't exactly lighthearted material. There is unique humor and characters have plenty of quirks but I find it to be a special kind of sad. Maybe it's just because of James Gandolfini. I know it sounds gay but he/tony always seems to have sadness in his eyes.

Things The Sopranos taught me:
Be a realist.
Don't lie to yourself.
Be very, very careful in which people you place your trust and your hopes in.
Dont be angry all the time.

He made his money (TONS of it). He hates fame. He hates notoriety. Hates questions about Sopranos. Hates fans. Hates being around people.

What they say is true... Tony Soprano isn't dead.

Gandolfini faked his death, and is now living in seclusion somewhere really nice... and private.
