See I didn't want to start an actual discussion which is why I didn't elaborate, this is so bothersome.

The movie moves too fast. She goes from seemingly accepting her role as future chief in Where You Are to immediately leaving and getting on a boat in How Far I'll Go, there's no moment of hesitation, no delay, no reluctance. And this also right after she's told her father's best friend or brother died at sea, but then she starts singing the song and starts sailing anyway.

Moana isn't a real character. She's supposed to be unsure of herself, but she's not really unsure of herself, the only time she comes across as unsure is when Maui leaves and immediately her ghost Grandma pops up and makes her sure of herself again. Moana barely has any flaws.

And speaking of when Maui leaves her, him coming back had no impact because it never felt like he wasn't going to come back. He got angry at her and said some hackneyed line, but he doesn't get angry and loud enough for you an audience member to be like "oh shit, he's really done with her". It also doesn't help that he leaves when there's like only 20 minutes of the movie left and Moana continues to not really struggle without him.

Her father should be a central figure in the movie, but he too is undeveloped and more of an idea than a character. Moana's entire conflict is that her dad doesn't want her to venture out and leave the island, but they barely have any scenes together and he's not present enough in the film to get a sense of who he is. When she's at sea we don't get a cut back to the island to see how worried he is, he doesn't even get to see her leave the island. And when she gets back? Nothing, they hug each other I think, but that's it.

I really wanted to love the movie, but it's too faulty for me to enjoy.

Welp, I just had to rub one out to some surprisingly quality Moana porn. Those are my thoughts.

That's not what that song was about. The music in Moana moved the story forward, the only example of an expositional song was maybe Shiny and that barely counts.

Those just sound like a lot of tropes you're listing off. I never got the impression Moana is supposed to be super unsure of going off, she's been rearing to go her whole life. The father being the main figure is also completely off, the main theme was clearly Moana discovering herself which happened at the correct pace given the tone of the film, which isn't some existential one you'd like it to be.
