I didn't like The 9th Gate, but I will say it was pure kino compared to the novel The Club Dumas. Polanski may be raped by The Devil for all eternity after he dies, but he was completely right to cut out the plot (the MAIN plot of the book) of a group of elitists who all own a few pages of a lost Three Musketeers chapter.

Haven't read El Club Dumas, if I like The Ninth Gate it's because of the sense of adventure and the devilish plot with that european cinematography. I mean, it's so rare now to see the combination of these 3 things in one movie.

If you like Venetian horror, there's Nosferatu A Venezia. It's a shit movie, but pretty atmospheric.
