A large chunk of season 2 was done by other people and it got into a bunch of weird plotlines like Nadine (woman who watches Dr. Amp) thought she was a teenager and terrorized people with her super strength. One of those plotlines involved the Hornes trying to collect the chaos emeralds (this was right around the release of Sonic 1 in 1991). It was weird and people mostly like to ignore those episodes but they've been throwing in some mocking nods.
