Anyone else feel that this scene was poorly directed? The Hound should have gotten closer to the fire, so you could have his eyes glow or something (similar to what happened with Stannis). Instead, the actor stood far away and hardly changed his facial expression, so it was hard to believe he actually saw anything. I know The Hound is supposed to be scared of fire, but in a scene like this it's important.

We've seen actual groups of people end up in this situation though. The Romans McFucking Exterminated the Cimbri, and the women weren't even at the battle, they killed their own children and then hanged themselves afterwards because they heard all the men were dead and realized that the Romans were going to give them the old Wog Slog when they got there.

Same thing with Watling Street, le brave Celts literally ended up getting rekt because the women and children were watching the battle behind some carts and the retreat turned into chaos as the men tried to push through them to regroup.

Inferior soldiers are worse than no soldiers. What's really egregious here is that war is about 3/4ths logistics. You don't actually need every hand holding a spear, you need four or five people carrying supplies, treating the wounded, repairing equipment etc. for each one person you need actually fighting. They never tell you just how huge the baggage train is in any medieval campaign because it makes the numbers of the armies so much larger. Not good for the story, all that.
