There were some decent threads here even after this year's finale. Threads filled with discussion, people sharing opinions and having genuinely interesting conversations. Sure there's always a trip or two mucking about or a random poster coming in to try and stir shit, or fake spoilers etc. But it's really easy to just ignore them and carry on the actual conversations. But that's become a bit harder ever since the announcement of the announcement of 13. You can hardly get a discussion or conversation going when 90% of the posts are about Kris or Jodie, people actively trying to upset the others and so forth.

The stock phrase "Have you ever actually been on 4chan?" doesn't really work on me because I know people get weird and antagonizing at times, and I know when to ignore those things. My point was that this whole 13 business is taking over the threads and dividing the posters, while we could be having actual discussions instead of throwing shit at each other.

I really like the idea of regeneration, whether the Doctor or Cloister or whoever, because I feel like it keys into a broader idea of collective humanity. Like, David Tennant is not Matt Smith. But they're both people, both British men, they go through similar things. 10 is "not" 11 but they have some similar feelings and experiences, it's only another layer of abstraction to push it beyond the "Doctor" character and make it a more general brotherhood thing. I'm in France and have contact with death in paradise (aka meurtres au paradises) team. It's not Marshall 100%

Exactly. DiP was a great career-pushing role for him but he had to have his family flown over and stay over while he filmed it. When he knew he was getting another baby he called the thing off, saying he can't do that to his growing family.

But DW is mainly filmed in Cardiff. Kris easily has the money to get a nice house there, maybe even close to the studio. He could film DW and get back in the evening to cuddle up to his wife. Being the Doctor usually lasts for 3-5 years, so he sets up in Cardiff, kids go to school there etc. Perfect.
Sure, they might shoot in a different country for 2 weeks for on-location filming of an alien planet/ancient city or whatever, but that's nothing compared to how he had to spend 9 months a year filming DiP halfway across the globe. Marshall will be able to play the Doctor, adding another considerable boost to this career, while keeping his young family close and being able to see his children grow up.

I wasn't keen on Kris at the start but it just makes too much sense. He quit a leading role in a huge UK detective drama filmed in Guadeloupe because he wanted to see his children grow up, and be part of the family he has. BBC obviously like him because he got steady ratings and is a recognisable face but not A-list or anything. He's got literally nothing else lined up at the moment acting wise. But taking the Doctor role is the perfect career choice because he can stay in the UK (probably Cardiff) and be close to his family, while also taking a great step in his acting career. And watching him on DiP convinced me he'd be a great Doctor, so in time I've warmed to the idea.

Jodie also makes a lot of sense though which is why I think this is so exciting. She's worked with Chibnall before on Broadchurch, has just finished work on her latest role, has appeared out of nowhere in the bookie odds like Smith and Capaldi. Plus with all the groundwork Moffat has laid for a female Doctor if Chibbs wants to take the plunge, its really not impossible and quite likely.

No. Playing in the idea of "not leaving when you're meant to" and "going too far" worked very well in a meta and in-story sense for Jenna staying on for another series. Carrying over the Clara-as-Doctor ideas from Flatine and Death in Heaven into a whole series making commentary on the idea of the Doctor from the base up worked very well, and was a new direction for the show, and could only work with a companion that was "lingering". Actually carrying through the idea of her as a human deconstruction of the Doctor to the point where she became a quasi-immortal reconstruction was just pitch perfect for the show, and Capaldi's Doctor in particular, IMO, when his era naturally suits questioning the tenants of the show much more since he's the first of a new cycle and has so many parallels to Hartnell. I just think that the logical conclusion to Clara's tendencies making her act more Doctor-ish/suicidal first worked as a great analysis of the Doctor and her from the ground-up, since Clara wasn't introduced as a Doctor expy at all, so her slowly morphing into that was earned and not cheap. But then properly carrying it through all the way felt like a validation of the Doctor AND her to me. If she'd just died, it would have been emotional, but wouldn't have said much for her in the greater context of the show IMO..."if you try and act like the Doctor, but aren't a magic Time Lord (who don't exist in irl btw kiddies), you'll die. Enjoy that message suckas". But Doctor Who is fantasy, it is fiction, so making her character arc actually land where the Doctor's did, more or less, as a sort of convergent evolution thing, was a daring idea that worked very well for me at least. Last Christmas is a great episode, S9 is often regarded as the best NewWho series for good reason.

It would've been a lovely, bittersweet ending for her. Laying in bed, really old and about to die of old age because the Doctor fucked up. But then Santa appeared AGAIN and it was all a dream. I would've preferred this way for Clara's exit instead of the American Diner Tardis travelling through time and space.
We'd get a fresh companion for Capaldi to have fun with. Clara's arc closed at the right moment. But she stayed on and I was just about done with Clara already but we got the whole of S9 of her being smug when we could've had someone else to hang out with 12.
